{"id":4376,"date":"2010-03-01T10:08:22","date_gmt":"2010-03-01T15:08:22","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.sinclairclarion.com\/?p=4376"},"modified":"2017-06-22T11:05:54","modified_gmt":"2017-06-22T16:05:54","slug":"preble-county-off-to-promising-start","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.sinclairclarion.com\/home\/tartan-news\/2010\/03\/01\/preble-county-off-to-promising-start\/","title":{"rendered":"Preble County off to promising start"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Janet Schmitt has goals for Sinclair Community College\u2019s Preble County Learning Center (PCLC), and it all starts with the location.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy goal is for the Center to become an integral part of Preble County,\u201d said Schmitt, the manager of the PCLC.<\/p>\n<p>As it stands now, the PCLC offers only entry-level courses, but the PCLC is partnering with Eaton High School to provide more educational opportunities for their students, according to Schmitt.<\/p>\n<p>Schmitt said the focus of the PCLC is on the students.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf their goal is to get a bachelor\u2019s degree, we want to help them get started,\u201d said Schmitt. \u201cOur goal is to really continue to grow here in Preble County. If a student just wants to take one class, we want to help them with that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Schmitt said she understands that flexibility is a major part of Sinclair\u2019s allure and that\u2019s a driving reason behind the partnership with Eaton.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ll be having chemistry here at the center for lectures, and then using Eaton High School in the evening for the lab facility,\u201d said Schmitt. \u201cI think one of the things that\u2019s really noteworthy here is the amount of community support.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Schmitt, who received a Master\u2019s of Business Administration from Murray State University, said she has always worked in higher education and helped open the PCLC in August. With the help of the Preble County Youth Foundation, Sinclair was able to add another satellite campus.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe had about a month to get ready for fall quarter,\u201d said Schmitt. \u201cAsk everybody here, that was a fun month.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Despite what the PCLC offers, there are differences between it and the other satellite campuses.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe don\u2019t have a free-standing bookstore, but we do assist students in ordering books online and books can be delivered here,\u201d said Schmitt.<\/p>\n<p>Jared Markland, a student at the PCLC, does not mind the limited-resources that the satellite campus may have. Markland prefers using them \u201cbecause of not having to deal with all the chaos of the Dayton campus.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The PCLC launched in the fall with 275 students, a figure that Schmitt said made Sinclair \u201cexceedingly happy.\u201d The winter figures have fallen, but this did not come as a surprise, said Schmitt.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI really want us to be able to help the traditional college student, but also the un-traditional college student, the people hit hard by the economy,\u201d said Schmitt. \u201cI want us to be a support for them.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Janet Schmitt has goals for Sinclair Community College\u2019s Preble County Learning Center (PCLC), and it all starts with the location. \u201cMy goal is for the Center to become an integral part of Preble County,\u201d said Schmitt, the manager of the PCLC.
