Superstitions are among some of the most intriguing aspects of any culture, and few are as well-known as those surrounding Friday the 13th.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 2026, Friday the 13th will pass three times. One already passed in February, with the two others landing in March and November. Friday the 13th occurring three times a year only happens every 11 or 12 years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The number 13 is considered bad luck in many different cultures, dating back for millennia. <\/p>\n\n\n

The Code of Hammurabi, a legal code written and used in 1792 B.C<\/a>., omitted the 13th law from its list. This is one of the earliest examples of the superstition surrounding the number 13. To this day, some hotels skip the number 13 in their floor levels. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

13 is considered an unlucky number in Christianity, stemming from the 13 guests attending the Last Supper, including Judas. This is referenced in the painting of the Last Supper by Leonardo da Vinci.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

12, on the other hand, is considered a lucky number in Christian culture<\/a>, referenced 189 times throughout the Bible. Since Judas was the last to arrive at the Last Supper, he changed the number of attendants from 12 to 13, symbolizing his future betrayal. <\/p>\n\n\n

Friday is a negative omen in Christianity as well, since it was the day of the week that Jesus was crucified. Friday was once considered the day of Venus, the goddess of love, though this was later suppressed by the Catholic Church in an effort to vilify Paganism. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

A Norse myth also tells the story of the 12 gods attending a dinner party in the land of Valhalla, where the trickster god Loki sneaks in, making 13 attendants. At this party, Loki arranged the death of another god, Balder, which is said to have caused much of humanity’s suffering. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

One of the first documented uses of Friday the 13th in association with superstitions comes from the 1834 play Les Finesses des Gribouilles<\/a>, where a character says, \u201cI was born on a Friday, December 13th, 1813, from which come all of my misfortunes.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n

In 1980, the horror movie \u201cFriday the 13th” was released. The film is one of the most popular in the horror genre, centering on the story of a masked killer who committed murder sprees on the unlucky day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Friday the 13th isn\u2019t the only \u201ccursed\u201d date, however. In some Hispanic cultures, Tuesday the 13th is considered unlucky, while Friday the 17th is bad luck in Italy. On these superstitious days, it is thought to be ill-advised to take risks<\/a> such as starting a business or even cross paths with a black cat. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
