Carter G. Over time, the week shifted to a month full of memorials and celebrations, becoming official in 1976.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Despite the yearly festivities, there is plenty of information that is largely forgotten or ignored in mainstream teaching. Following are five facts that Tartans may not have learned about Black history.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>1.)<\/strong> Ohio is home to one of the country\u2019s first historically Black colleges, Wilberforce University. Both the institution and the city it resides in are named after William Wilberforce, a British abolitionist.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One of the university\u2019s noteworthy alumni was <a href=\"https:\/\/blackamericaweb.com\/2019\/07\/15\/little-known-black-history-fact-james-h-mcgee\/\">James H. McGee, who became Dayton\u2019s first Black mayor<\/a> and held the office from 1970 to 1982. In 1980, the musicians teamed up to perform 40 shows in less than five months to drum up support.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It became <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/music\/2012\/jan\/08\/scott-heron-wonder-martin-luther-king\">the greatest petition-led event in U.S. history<\/a> at the time, earning six million signatures before it was passed. Up until that point, people were using cloth pads and rags. That changed when Kenner created an improved \u201cbelt\u201d that protected much better against leaking accidents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At the time, applying for a patent was illegal for Black women. However, <a href=\"https:\/\/blackpast.org\/african-american-history\/mary-kenner-1912-2006\/\">Kenner remained a lifelong inventor<\/a> and was able to patent her creation in 1959.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Related:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sinclairclarion.com\/home\/opinion\/2021\/02\/20\/why-we-celebrate-black-history-month-and-not-white-history-month\/\">Opinion: Why We Celebrate Black History Month, But Not &#8216;White History Month&#8217;<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>4.) <\/strong>Many, if not most, <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.loc.gov\/loc\/2022\/03\/black-cowboys-at-home-on-the-range\/#:~:text=No%20one%20knows%20exactly%20how,cooks%2C%20wranglers%20and%20bronco%20busters.\">cowboys of the \u201cWild West\u201d were Black<\/a>. The stories from this time are surrounded by myths and glamor, but \u201ccowboy\u201d was not always a desirable title. She was ultimately unable to secure the Democratic bid, but served as the country\u2019s first Black Congresswoman and paved the way for a generation of young Black women to get into politics. On a blazing campaign trail, Chisholm sued to be included in televised debates and even survived three assassination attempts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>During her tenure as congresswoman, Chisholm made a name for herself as independent and unwilling to bend to pressure.
