{"id":4130,"date":"2010-02-15T10:54:07","date_gmt":"2010-02-15T15:54:07","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.sinclairclarion.com\/?p=4130"},"modified":"2017-06-22T11:00:27","modified_gmt":"2017-06-22T16:00:27","slug":"sinclair-battles-the-snow","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.sinclairclarion.com\/home\/tartan-news\/2010\/02\/15\/sinclair-battles-the-snow\/","title":{"rendered":"Sinclair battles the snow"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>During the area\u2019s largest snowfall of the winter, Sinclair Community College attempted to keep its doors opened last week.<\/p>\n<p>On Tuesday, Feb. 9, Sinclair shut down at noon due to inclement weather. On Feb. 10, the college delayed its opening until noon.<\/p>\n<p>Sinclair Vice President Jeff Boudouris is a part of the college\u2019s team that funnels weather and road information to Sinclair President Steven Johnson, who ultimately makes the final call to shut down the campus.<\/p>\n<p>President Johnson was unable to comment due to the Clarion deadline.<\/p>\n<p>Boudouris said three main elements go into the decision \u2014 the weather, the roads and the campus grounds.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re considering the students, staff and faculty as the whole balance,\u201d Boudouris said. \u201cMultiple elements go into the decision.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Some students at Sinclair were not happy with Sinclair\u2019s decision to close early on Feb. 9 and open late on Feb. 10.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSchool being opened (on Tuesday) was an inconvenience,\u201d said Ronnie Moore, a Nursing student. \u201cI have a son and a daughter that didn\u2019t have school. Sinclair needs to take that into consideration.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Boudouris suggested the decision to close school is never a flawless process.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou have so many dynamic variables that are going on,\u201d he said. \u201cWe try and make the best assessment that we have \u2026 it\u2019s never going to be perfect.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>English major Brittany Monterosso said she didn\u2019t agree with the decision to send students home on Feb. 9.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was dumb having us come to school and after we get here, cancel and make us drive all the way back in the snow,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Twelve surrounding counties, including Montgomery, were under snow emergencies on the night of Feb. 9, according to Whiotv.com. On Feb. 10, Wright State University closed for the day, while Sinclair began classes at noon. Boudouris said Wright State\u2019s closing was connected to the Level 2 snow emergency in Greene County.<\/p>\n<p>Boudouris said each college has it\u2019s own situations and set of circumstances and to continually check media outlets for the latest closing or delay information.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCommunication is critical,\u201d he said. \u201cWe encourage all of our students to check (www.sinclair.edu) and the local media because things can change very quickly.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>During the area\u2019s largest snowfall of the winter, Sinclair Community College attempted to keep its doors opened last week.
