The creator behind AppleTV\u2019s \u201cThe Changeling\u201d was chosen alongside American Chicano heavyweight Luis Alberto Urrea and the celebrated author of the critically acclaimed \u201cDominicana\u201d, Angie Cruz.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.longwood.edu\/media\/english-and-modern-languages\/public-site\/dospassos-150x229.jpg\" alt=\"\" style=\"width:172px;height:auto\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><em>John Dos Passos, pictured here, is remembered for his work highlighting life in post-WWI USA. <\/em><\/strong><em>Photo Source: Longwood University <\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The annual Dos Passos Award is in its 43<sup>rd<\/sup> year and is named after legendary author John Dos Passos. Of Portuguese descent and celebrated for works such as the U.S.A trilogy, Dos Passos was renowned for his ability to capture the hopes and dashed dreams of America post-WWI. According to Longwood University, which administers the award, it was named in honor of the late author to commemorate his often forgotten literary achievements \u201cby recognizing other writers in his name.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/images.squarespace-cdn.com\/content\/v1\/5c5b3c31f8135a0f3ad04485\/1563914866593-C10UZPPG2U9I90UUAVN1\/IMG_7273+copy.jpg?format=1000w\" alt=\"\" style=\"width:349px;height:auto\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><em>Angie Cruz is the author of &#8220;Dominicana&#8221; and &#8220;How Not To Drown In A Glass Of Water&#8221;.<\/em><\/strong> <em>Photo Credit: Erika Morillo<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In addition to Cruz, Urrea and Lavalle, Carter Sickels and Peter Rock were also nominated for the prestigious prize. The university announced that the winner of the award would be named next month.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lavalle\u2019s longlist of titles include \u201cThe Changeling\u201d, \u201cLone Women\u201d, and \u201cSlapboxing with Jesus\u201d. &nbsp;Beyond prose, the New York native has also written comics such as \u201cWolverine: Sabretooth\u201d with Marvel and \u201cVictor Lavalle\u2019s Destroyer\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/f3aa61.a2cdn1.secureserver.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/joe-mazza-brave-lux-chicago-ne-3281786820-o-682x1024_0_o.jpg\" alt=\"\" style=\"width:229px;height:auto\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><em>Urrea was nominated for the Pulitzer Prize in 2005 for &#8220;The Devil&#8217;s Highway&#8221;. <\/em><\/strong><em>Photo Source: luisurrea.com <\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Offering stiff competition is the celebrated Californian Urrea, who has earned acclaim as a writer of fiction, nonfiction and poetry. \u201cThe Devil\u2019s Highway\u201d, \u201cThe House of Broken Angels\u201d and \u201cGood Night, Irene,\u201d are just a few of his most popular titles. He was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize in 2005.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The five shortlisted authors join a prestigious list of nominees dating back to the first Dos Passos prize winner, Graham Green. Winners in the last 15 years include Sherman Alexie, &nbsp;Colson Whitehead, and Rabih Alameddine.
