Around the country, Cinco de Mayo<\/a> has become a bit of a phenomenon, a celebration of Mexican independence that now stretches far beyond the borders of our southern neighbor. It\u2019s the perfect time to relish Mexico\u2019s rich culture and to remind ourselves of the many great contributions Chicanos have made to this country. Don\u2019t want to break the bank or simply won\u2019t have enough time to celebrate with friends? Here\u2019s a few ways you can make the most of Cinco de Mayo without having to leave the comfort of your home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1. Read a book<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Many outstanding authors with Chicano<\/a> roots have written some great books you\u2019ll want to dive into. Whether it\u2019s spooky and speculative like the work of Silvia Garcia-Moreno or the down-to-earth literary fiction tomes of Luis Alberto Urrea, you name the genre and there is a great Chicano writer to enjoy. Not only are books like \u201cMexican Gothic\u201d and \u201cThe House of Broken Angels\u201d an absolute blast to read but they also touch on important social issues. 2. Watch a movie<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

There are some real standout flicks worthy of your time all year-round. But Cinco de Mayo sets the perfect tone for a movie like the Academy Award-winning \u201cRoma,\u201d \u201cFrida,\u201d \u201cAmores Perros\u201d or \u201cLike Water for Chocolate\u201d. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

3. Start streaming!<\/strong>\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

TVs streaming revolution has led to a flood of high-quality dramas from around Latin America including Mexico. \u201cSr. Avila\u201d and \u201cLa Casa de Las Flores\u201d are two of the most bingeable shows out there. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

4. Eat!<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

We love eating Mexican food but how many of us have had the gumption to try making it ourselves? It\u2019s easy to find recipes for enchiladas, fajitas, tacos, or burritos. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
