\u201cI\u2019ve always made things throughout my entire life,\u201d Voegle, a Fine Art major, said.<\/p>\n
Voegle, 30, put more than 40 hours into creating a sphinx sculpture for the winter production of \u201cAntigone.\u201d<\/p>\n
The sphinx Voegle created is a mythological creature with a woman\u2019s head, eagle wings and a lion\u2019s body that stands four feet high. The sculpture is made out of polystyrene foam that he said was extremely difficult to carve.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt was a fairly slow process,\u201d Voegle said. \u201cWith something like this, if you make a wrong cut, it\u2019s done. It was stressful.\u201d<\/p>\n
Voegle said it felt great to finish the piece, but more work could have been done.<\/p>\n
\u201cI\u2019m never 100 percent satisfied with my work,\u201d he said. \u201cPersonally, I would have continued working on it beyond where it is. There is always something left to be desired in all the work that I do.\u201d<\/p>\n
Voegle was hired as a theatre employee in the fall after discovering the position at Sinclair\u2019s job fair. Voegle said the theatre department was considering purchasing a sphinx statue.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe department was happier to have a student create the piece than to purchase,\u201d Voegle said. \u201cIt might have cost them more to have me do it, but because (Sinclair) is an educational institution it was more important to them to have a student as highly involved in the set as possible.\u201d<\/p>\n
Blair Hall Theatre Manager Terry Stump said giving Voegle the task to create the sphinx worked out well. Stump is also the set designer for the \u201cAntigone\u201d production.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s gorgeous,\u201d he said of the sphinx. \u201cWe were thrilled with what (Voegle) gave us.\u201d<\/p>\n
With the upcoming production of \u201cAntigone,\u201d Voegle and Stump said the sculpture would be center stage throughout the entire play.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe set that has been designed is very intense,\u201d Voegle said. \u201cIt\u2019s definitely exciting and I\u2019m excited to see the play.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
