Did you watch the CW this fall?\u00a0 Or have you seen NBC\u2019s football commercials?\u00a0 Perhaps you listen to 103.9 or went to X-Fest this year?\u00a0 If so, chances are you have been exposed to Christian rock.<\/p>\n
Christian rock bands have been around for decades.\u00a0 In the past, bands like Petra were popular mainly in small Christian circles while bands like P.O.D. enjoyed mainstream success.\u00a0 Today, bands like Anberlin, Skillet, Flyleaf and Red are subtly infiltrating the mainstream music scene with a vengeance.\u00a0 My guess is the mainstream doesn\u2019t even know it yet.<\/p>\n
Radio stations are beginning to notice some of the high-powered anthems in the Christian rock world.\u00a0 Flyleaf and Red are frequently played on 103.9 the X, and both bands have played at X-Fest.\u00a0 All four bands have been featured in the rock station\u2019s Rage in the Cage.\u00a0 This past November, Skillet\u2019s \u201cMonster\u201d battled established rock bands like Papa Roach, Mudvayne, Puddle of Mud and Green Day for a full two weeks and won every battle.<\/p>\n
TV networks are beginning to notice, too.\u00a0 Anberlin\u2019s \u201cHaight Street\u201d intro was recently used in commercials promoting the CW network, and their song \u201cEnjoy the Silence\u201d was featured on episode six of \u201cThe Vampire Diaries.\u201d\u00a0 Skillet\u2019s \u201cHero\u201d was used by NBC to promote Sunday Night Football in the fall.<\/p>\n
The notoriety doesn\u2019t stop there.\u00a0 Skillet\u2019s album \u201cAwake\u201d debuted at number two on the SoundScan\/Billboard 200 in September 2009.\u00a0 Flyleaf\u2019s debut album spent 133 weeks on the Billboard 200, and it was in the top five of the Billboard Hard Rock Albums chart. Red was nominated for a Grammy award for their album \u201cInnocence and Instinct,\u201d their second career nomination.\u00a0 Anberlin has toured the world and has played concerts with bands like Paramore, Red Jumpsuit Apparatus, My Chemical Romance and more.<\/p>\n
So the next time you\u2019re singing \u201cAgain\u201d at the top of your lungs or playing air guitar to \u201cFeel Good Drag,\u201d remember you\u2019re taking part in a musical revolution of rocking proportions.\u00a0 Christian music isn\u2019t what it used to be.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
