From the continuation of fall festivities and Halloween to Breast Cancer Awareness month, this time of year has a lot on its agenda. So, let\u2019s bring attention to one more important October-based event: National Disability Employment Awareness Month (NDEAM).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;NDEAM is in place \u201cto educate about disability employment issues\u201d states the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dol.gov\/\">U.S. Department of Labor<\/a> \u201c&#8230;[this] celebrates the many and varied contributions of America&#8217;s workers with disabilities\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;How did NDEAM come to be and what can you do to show support and bring awareness?&nbsp; Well, let\u2019s talk about it.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\">Related story: <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sinclairclarion.com\/home\/tartan-news\/2016\/10\/17\/seeing-the-able-in-disability\/\" target=\"_blank\">Seeing the &#8220;able&#8221; in disability<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The history of NDEAM dates back over 70 years. This year\u2019s theme is <em>\u201cDisability: Part of the Equity Equation\u201d, <\/em>which highlights the many contributions that disabled individuals bring in the forms of diversity and depth to a multitude of career sectors. A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.state.gov\/on-national-disability-employment-awareness-month\/\">2022 press statement<\/a> provided by the <em>U.S. Department of State <\/em>proclaimed that \u201ca workforce inclusive of persons with disabilities is critical to achieving broad-based economic growth around the world\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-heading\"><strong>October is National Disability Employment Awareness Month. Learning the history behind this awareness and the unique business practices that should be taken, are at the very core of creating an inclusive workplace.<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Creating accessible workspaces with the appropriate technology and infrastructures is a great place to start, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.monster.com\/career-advice\/article\/disability-friendly-companies\">many companies<\/a> are already implementing this. Also, make time to sit down with your disabled employees and co-workers\u2014in a respectful manner\u2014 and learn more about their specific disability and the proper etiquette that pertains to it. An icebreaker such as this steers away from any misleading stigmas that may surround the impairment plus this lets them know that you\u2019re an ally and that their success matters to you!&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Many strides have been made to equalize the workplace as we step into a more progressive society, however, there\u2019s always room for improvement and it starts with you.
