{"id":3406,"date":"2009-11-12T13:38:04","date_gmt":"2009-11-12T18:38:04","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.sinclairclarion.com\/?p=3406"},"modified":"2017-06-22T10:26:43","modified_gmt":"2017-06-22T15:26:43","slug":"sinclair-to-host-20th-annual-pre-kwanzaa-celebration-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.sinclairclarion.com\/home\/tartan-news\/2009\/11\/12\/sinclair-to-host-20th-annual-pre-kwanzaa-celebration-2\/","title":{"rendered":"Sinclair to host 20th annual Pre-Kwanzaa celebration"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Sinclair Community College will host its 20th annual Pre-Kwanzaa Celebration on Nov. 21.\u00a0 The celebration will share what Kwanzaa is, what it means to families and what it means to African culture, according to Chair of Psychology Boikai Twe.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe pre-celebration is to prepare the community for the celebration of Kwanzaa which begins on Dec. 26,\u201d Twe said.<\/p>\n<p>Twe said that the celebration has an impact on those who attend.\u00a0 People from many cultures or ethnicities have participated in past events, including Native Americans and students from Africa.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt comes out of African-American culture, but it\u2019s a celebration of all communities,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Twe describes Kwanzaa as a seven-day celebration of African-American culture, family and community.\u00a0 Each day focuses on a different principle, including unity, self-determination, collective responsibility, cooperative economics, purpose, creativity and faith.\u00a0 Twe said because the principles are humanistic in nature, they can be celebrated by anyone.<\/p>\n<p>Twe said the celebration will be held on a Saturday evening so that families can come to the event together.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf we had it during the week, it would be more difficult for families to attend,\u201d Twe said.<\/p>\n<p>The celebration will feature African drumming and dancing by Unconscious Realities, a Cleveland based group, and guest speaker Dr. Ivy Chevers, who is teaching a Rasta and Reggae class this winter.\u00a0 There will also be a \u201cSoul Food Dinner\u201d as well as other music and guest artists.<\/p>\n<p>The event is sponsored by Sinclair\u2019s Cultural Diversity Committee, African-American Studies Program, African-American Culture Club and ABLE Youth Leadership Institute.\u00a0 For more information, contact Dr. Boikai Twe at 512-2913 or boikai.twe@sinclair.edu.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Sinclair Community College will host its 20th annual Pre-Kwanzaa Celebration on Nov. 21.\u00a0 The celebration will share what Kwanzaa is, what it means to families and what it means to African culture, according to Chair of Psychology Boikai Twe. \u201cThe pre-celebration is to prepare the community for the celebration of Kwanzaa which begins on Dec.
