{"id":32944,"date":"2021-11-02T15:41:51","date_gmt":"2021-11-02T19:41:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.sinclairclarion.com\/home\/?p=32944"},"modified":"2021-11-08T15:52:14","modified_gmt":"2021-11-08T20:52:14","slug":"netflix-employess-walk-out-in-repsonse-to-dave-chapelle-special","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.sinclairclarion.com\/home\/entertainment\/2021\/11\/02\/netflix-employess-walk-out-in-repsonse-to-dave-chapelle-special\/","title":{"rendered":"Netflix Employess Walk Out in Repsonse to Dave Chappelle Special"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On Oct. 20, hundreds of Netflix employees walked out of work in protest of the controversial Dave Chappelle special \u201cThe Closer.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Those employees, many other supporters, and activists carried signs that read: \u201cTransphobia Is Not a Joke\u201d and \u201cHey Netflix: Do Better.\u201d The employees even started chants of \u201cTeam trans!\u201d&nbsp;They rallied together a couple of hours before work. At noon that same day, some Netflix employees stopped what they were doing and called off the rest of the day.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ashlee Marie Preston who was featured in the Netflix documentary \u201cDisclosure\u201d, which is about Hollywood\u2019s impact on the transgender community, was one of the organizers for the rally.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbs58.com\/news\/netflix-co-ceo-on-dave-chappelle-fallout-i-screwed-up\">According to CBS,<\/a> when Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos was asked about the communication between his employees and detractors, he said: \u201cI screwed it up in two ways. First and foremost, I should have led with a lot more humanity. Meaning, I had a group of employees who were definitely feeling pain and hurt from a decision we made. And I think that needs to be acknowledged up front before you get into the nuts and bolts of anything. I didn&#8217;t do that.&#8221;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">During the rally, there was a small group of counter-protesters who were vastly outnumbered and had signs that read \u201cJokes Are Funny\u201d and others that said, \u201cNetflix, Don\u2019t Cancel Free Speech\u201d. The rally remained mostly peaceful.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Even with Dave Chappelle and his special being criticized, some people have defended him. Damon Wayans, a comedian, is one of those people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Dave Chappelle\u2019s special premiered on Oct. 5, and features several jokes focused on transgender individuals.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One of the most highly criticized things Chappelle said in this special was \u201cGender is a fact. Every human being in this room, every human being on earth, had to pass through the legs of a woman to be on earth.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The special still continues to draw criticism from the LGBTQ+ community.
