Mike DeWine <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fox19.com\/2021\/06\/17\/dewine-ohio-observe-juneteenth-state-holiday\/\">declared it a state holiday<\/a>. On the same day Sinclair hosted an online event called \u201cJuneteenth Celebration\u201d with speaker Dr. Eddie Glaude Jr. to discuss the history of the event and the importance of it becoming a national holiday. Dr. Gaulde is a New York Times bestselling author and the Chair of African American Studies at Princeton University.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He explained how the state of Texas was still in rebellion in 1865, two years after Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation. This celebration was almost an alternative to regular Fourth of July celebrations as the holiday has always been complicated for African Americans. It created a nation where slavery was legal.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/masshumanities.org\/files\/programs\/douglass\/speech_complete.pdf\">On July 5, 1852<\/a> Frederick Douglas also gave his&nbsp; famous speech \u201cThe Meaning of July Fourth for the Negro.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.zinnedproject.org\/news\/tdih\/britain-slavery-abolition-act\/\">August 1, 1834<\/a> was the day slavery was abolished in the British West Indies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dr. Gaulde described these dates as an \u201calternative celebratory calendar.\u201d The American education system has a history of not acknowledging its past of slavery and racism. Making Juneteenth a national holiday is a push against that.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cJuneteenth is a complicated holiday,\u201d he said. \u201cIt brings into view the vexed relationship between freedom and democracy. It\u2019s about delayed freedom. It\u2019s about resilience.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He stressed how African Americans were part of the fight to free themselves. There is an assumption that they were only beneficiaries and not participants. He didn\u2019t describe himself as optimistic but as having a \u201cblue-soaked hope.\u201d The story of America is still that we are the greatest nation in the world without blemish. Americans need to reject that narrative in order to actually become a more perfect union, as the Founding Fathers intended.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cNow that [Juneteenth] has been mainstreamed and made a national story,\u201d Dr. Gaulde said. \u201cOh my goodness, now we have a chance to tell a better story.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A great way to celebrate Juneteenth and affect change is to educate yourself.
