Prince Philip passed away on April 9th, 2021 at <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.rct.uk\/visit\/windsor-castle\" target=\"_blank\">Windsor Castle<\/a>, according to a <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.royal.uk\/announcement-death-duke-edinburgh\" target=\"_blank\">statement from Buckingham Place<\/a>. He was 99 years old and was married to Queen Elizabeth II for 73 years.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/britishheritage.com\/royals\/prince-phillip-biography\">Prince Philip was born on June 10th, 1921<\/a> to Prince Andrew of Greece and Princess Alice of Battenburg in <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"http:\/\/www.visitgreece.gr\/en\/greek_islands\/ionian_islands\/corfu\" target=\"_blank\">Corfu<\/a>, a Greek island. Due to his parents\u2019 royal heritage, he was a prince of both Greece and Denmark. Prince Philip was also a descendant of <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.royal.uk\/queen-victoria\" target=\"_blank\">Queen Victoria<\/a>.<br>When he was only a year old, Greece <a href=\"https:\/\/www.biography.com\/royalty\/prince-philip\">started to experience tension<\/a> and his uncle, <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/biography\/Constantine-I-king-of-Greece\" target=\"_blank\">King Constantine I<\/a>, was forced to step down from the throne. Prince Andrew was banished from the country and the family left with Prince Philip in a box being used as a cot.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Prince Philip Makes Rare Public Appearance as He Hands Over Military Role\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/ezDJJKEvi1Y?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><figcaption>(Source: YouTube\/The Royal Family Channel)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>\u00a0They eventually went to France and when Prince Philip was still a child, Princess Alice was sent to a psychiatric <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/uk-42651950\">facility<\/a> due to a mental collapse. He also did not see much of his father, who moved to another part of France. Maternal family members who lived in the United Kingdom took care of the prince. Prince Philip was able to speak both French and German and spent much of his time at a boarding school in Scotland as a teen. It was <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.royal.uk\/70-facts-about-queen-and-duke-edinburghs-wedding#:~:text=A%20Royal%20Engagement&amp;text=Princess%20Elizabeth%20and%20Prince%20Philip,announced%20on%209%20July%201947.\" target=\"_blank\">in 1934 that he met his future wife<\/a>, Princess Elizabeth, at a royal wedding.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Prince Philip went on to attend the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.royalnavy.mod.uk\/our-organisation\/bases-and-stations\/training-establishments\/brnc-dartmouth\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Britannia Royal Naval College<\/a>, where he excelled and became top in his class. Princess Elizabeth, age 13 at this time, accompanied her father and sister on a trip to the school in 1939. Prince Philip and Princess Elizabeth stayed in contact via letters for years after this meeting as Prince Philip also served in the British navy during World War II, becoming one of its youngest first lieutenants.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Prince Philip and Princess Elizabeth <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/life-style\/royal-family\/prince-philip-death-timeline-queen-children-b1803600.html\" target=\"_blank\">became engaged in 1946<\/a> but did not <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/news\/world\/queen-elizabeth-ii-prince-philip-story-their-marriage-n1259697\" target=\"_blank\">share their engagement<\/a> with the world until July of 1947. They were married that November at <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.westminster-abbey.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">Westminster Abbey<\/a>. Upon this union, Prince Philip chose to give up the royal titles that he previously held and was given the new titles, Duke of Edinburgh, Earl of Merioneth, and Baron Greenwich.<br>He also took the last name of his mother\u2019s family, <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.royal.uk\/royal-family-name\" target=\"_blank\">Mountbatten<\/a>. The couple went on to have <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.royal.uk\/royal-family\" target=\"_blank\">four children<\/a> together: Charles, Anne, Andrew, and Edward. They had eight grandchildren, including princes William and Harry, as well as ten great-grandchildren.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Prince Philip continued to serve in the navy during the early years of their marriage. By 1952, he had advanced to the position of commander but had to step down after the death of Princess Elizabeth\u2019s father as she took on the role of queen.<br>Prince Philip became the Queen\u2019s consort, eventually holding the position longer than anyone else. He supported Queen Elizabeth II in her royal duties and was often by her side as she made public appearances.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Prince Philip brought many changes around the palace amidst moving in. Servants no longer powdered their hair, the second kitchen that operated only for the royal family was reduced to one, and intercoms were placed throughout the palace to save servants from having to share messages. He also helped a larger variety of people meet Queen Elizabeth. He was also affiliated with over 780 organizations. Prince Philip traveled to 143 countries as well. In 1956, he established the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dofe.org\/about\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Duke of Edinburgh Award<\/a>, which rewards people ages 14-25 for volunteering, acquiring new skills, or exploring.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Prince Philip was an advocate for a healthy environment as well as wildlife. He switched to an electric car in the \u201860s to avoid spreading pollution. In 1961, he was named president of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.worldwildlife.org\/\">World Wildlife Fund<\/a> in the United Kingdom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Prince Philip also had his pilot licenses and was the first royal family member to fly a helicopter from Buckingham<a href=\"https:\/\/www.rct.uk\/visit\/the-state-rooms-buckingham-palace\/buckingham-palace-garden#\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"> Palace Garden<\/a>. He enjoyed polo as well as carriage and boat racing, even taking part in competitions.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2011, Queen Elizabeth II gave Prince Philip the title <a href=\"https:\/\/www.royal.uk\/duke-edinburgh-appointed-lord-high-admiral\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Lord High Admiral<\/a> upon his 90th birthday.
