{"id":31642,"date":"2021-03-24T15:00:04","date_gmt":"2021-03-24T20:00:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.sinclairclarion.com\/home\/?p=31642"},"modified":"2021-03-24T15:00:04","modified_gmt":"2021-03-24T20:00:04","slug":"womens-history-month-musicians","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.sinclairclarion.com\/home\/tartan-news\/2021\/03\/24\/womens-history-month-musicians\/","title":{"rendered":"Women\u2019s History Month: Musicians"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>Florence Price&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Florence Price was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.classicfm.com\/discover-music\/florence-price\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">born in Arkansas in 1887<\/a>. Her mother was a music teacher, and Price graduated with honors from the <a href=\"https:\/\/necmusic.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">New England Conservatory of Music<\/a>. In 1910, she was given a position at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cau.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Clark Atlanta University<\/a> in Georgia as the head of the music department. Even after moving to different locations, Price continued to focus on music and released four piano compositions in 1928.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Price submitted her piece, \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=9s4yY_A2A2k\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Symphony in E Minor<\/a>,\u201d to the Wanamaker Foundation Awards in 1932, where she received first place. She became the first black woman to have a composition played by a well-known symphony orchestra, the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, in 1933. Price later wrote a vocal piece, \u201cMy Soul Has Been Anchored in the Lord,\u201d which became very popular. When an Easter Sunday concert took place at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/topic\/Lincoln-Memorial-monument-Washington-DC\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Lincoln Memorial<\/a>, this song was selected to be performed at the end of the show, being heard by people all over the United States through the radio.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Etta James\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed aligncenter is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-4-3 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<span class=\"embed-youtube\" style=\"text-align:center; display: block;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"youtube-player\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/u9sq3ME0JHQ?version=3&#038;rel=1&#038;showsearch=0&#038;showinfo=1&#038;iv_load_policy=1&#038;fs=1&#038;hl=en-US&#038;autohide=2&#038;wmode=transparent\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" style=\"border:0;\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts allow-same-origin allow-popups allow-presentation allow-popups-to-escape-sandbox\"><\/iframe><\/span>\n<\/div><figcaption>(Source: Youtube\/Rebel Songbird)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Etta James was <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.biography.com\/musician\/etta-james\" target=\"_blank\">born Jamesetta Hawkins<\/a> on Jan. 25, 1938, in Los Angeles. James started out singing earlier in her life, joining her church choir as young as five, and could also be heard on the radio. As James got older, she <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.allmusic.com\/artist\/etta-james-mn0000806542\/biography\" target=\"_blank\">created a band with friends<\/a>, The Peaches, a name that was also used for James. They met bandleader <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.rockhall.com\/inductees\/johnny-otis\" target=\"_blank\">Johnny Otis<\/a> who worked with the group and directed them to a record label. It was in the \u201860s that James began to work on her own.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>James\u2019 career brought her minimal pay at first, but reached the charts after she signed with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rockhall.com\/inductees\/leonard-chess\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Leonard Chess<\/a> and released songs such as \u201cAll I Could do was Cry,\u201d \u201cAt Last,\u201d and \u201cI\u2019d Rather Go Blind.\u201d Her career slowed for some time in the \u201870s, but James picked back up again as her album, \u201cSeven Year Itch,\u201d was released in the late \u201880s. James was inducted into the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rockhall.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Rock and Roll Hall of Fame<\/a> in 1994. She also received a Grammy for the album, \u201cMystery Lady: Songs of Billie Holiday.\u201d She would go on to win more Grammy Awards after this.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The Andrews Sisters<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Andrews Sisters <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cmgww.com\/music\/andrews\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">consisted of three members<\/a>, LaVerne, Maxene and Patty. All three were born in Minnesota and spent much time singing as children. They first started their career as they toured with Larry Rich\u2019s 55-member troupe and later traveled to various locations to perform on their own. It took six years of hard work before their song, \u201cBei Mir\u201d topped Billboard\u2019s chart. From here, the Andrews Sisters\u2019 career skyrocketed.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As <a href=\"https:\/\/www.history.com\/topics\/world-war-ii\/world-war-ii-history\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">World War II <\/a>ensued, the Andrews Sisters were called, \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/topic\/the-Andrews-Sisters\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">America\u2019s Wartime Sweethearts<\/a>,\u201d as they showed great support for troops \u2013 going on a tour to perform just for them. The group eventually became what is considered the most popular female band of that time period. They released hits such as \u201cHold Tight\u201d and \u201cBeer Barrel Polka.\u201d They also starred and gave musical performances in films like \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.tcm.com\/tcmdb\/title\/92154\/swingtime-johnny\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Swingtime Johnny<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Ella Fitzgerald\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-4-3 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<span class=\"embed-youtube\" style=\"text-align:center; display: block;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"youtube-player\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/1bgFkeDLpSI?version=3&#038;rel=1&#038;showsearch=0&#038;showinfo=1&#038;iv_load_policy=1&#038;fs=1&#038;hl=en-US&#038;autohide=2&#038;wmode=transparent\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" style=\"border:0;\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts allow-same-origin allow-popups allow-presentation allow-popups-to-escape-sandbox\"><\/iframe><\/span>\n<\/div><figcaption>(Source: Youtube\/Some One Ella Fitzgerald)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ellafitzgerald.com\/about\/biography\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Born on April 25, 1917<\/a>, in Newport News, Virginia, Ella Fitzgerald spent much time singing and dancing during her childhood and also enjoyed performances at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.apollotheater.org\/about\/history\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Apollo Theater<\/a>. She faced struggles in school and with the police, as she caused issues after her mother died in 1932.\u00a0 It got to the point where Fitzgerald had no money or anyone to support her. When given the opportunity to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/biography\/Ella-Fitzgerald\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">participate in the \u201cAmateur Night<\/a>\u201d at Apollo Theater, Fitzgerald gave a singing performance, which was met excitedly by the crowd. This night led Fitzgerald to people who could make her a star.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Fitzgerald released her first song, \u201cLove and Kisses\u201d in 1935, but it was in 1938 where she saw real success with \u201cA-Tisket, A-Tasket.\u201d She had been working for some time with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pas.org\/about\/hall-of-fame\/william-chick-webb\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Chick Webb<\/a>, and when he passed away the following year, Fitzgerald took over his orchestra, which was then called \u201cElla Fitzgerald and Her Famous Band.\u201d Fitzgerald went on to work in the jazz and big band genres with many notable names including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bennygoodman.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Benny Goodman<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.louisarmstronghouse.org\/biography\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Louis Armstrong<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irvingberlin.com\/biography\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Irving Berlin<\/a>. Over the course of her career, Fitzgerald had more than 200 albums, performed at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.carnegiehall.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Carnegie Hall<\/a> 26 times and won 14 Grammys.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Aretha Franklin\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-4-3 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<span class=\"embed-youtube\" style=\"text-align:center; display: block;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"youtube-player\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/6FOUqQt3Kg0?version=3&#038;rel=1&#038;showsearch=0&#038;showinfo=1&#038;iv_load_policy=1&#038;fs=1&#038;hl=en-US&#038;autohide=2&#038;wmode=transparent\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" style=\"border:0;\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts allow-same-origin allow-popups allow-presentation allow-popups-to-escape-sandbox\"><\/iframe><\/span>\n<\/div><figcaption>(Source: Youtube\/Tatan Brown)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Aretha Franklin was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.biography.com\/musician\/aretha-franklin\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">born in Memphis, Tennessee<\/a>, on March 25, 1942. She began to show musical talent when she was very young, as she exhibited great caliber in her vocals and piano. In her adolescence, she often sang at her father\u2019s church and also recorded songs there. After getting a record deal with Columbia Records, Franklin released her first album, \u201cAretha.\u201d This album included tracks that would make the charts.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Franklin released her cover of <a href=\"https:\/\/otisredding.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Otis Redding\u2019s<\/a> \u201cRespect\u201d in 1967, which topped the charts of the R&amp;B and pop genres. She also won two Grammy Awards \u2013 the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.grammy.com\/grammys\/artists\/aretha-franklin\/11503\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">first of many<\/a>. She went on to release many more hits, including \u201cI Say a Little Prayer\u201d and \u201c(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman.\u201d Her success gave her the name, \u201cQueen of Soul.\u201d Franklin also performed at the funeral of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.history.com\/topics\/black-history\/martin-luther-king-jr\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.<\/a>, where she performed \u201cPrecious Lord.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Clara Schumann&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Clara Schumann was born in Germany on Sept. 13, 1819. She began learning how to play the piano at five-years-old and became very popular throughout Europe as early as 1835. She had a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.collinsdictionary.com\/us\/dictionary\/english\/piano-concerto\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Piano Concerto<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.laphil.com\/about\/watch-and-listen\/get-to-know-clara-schumann\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">when she was 14<\/a> and continued to succeed into her adulthood. She met composer <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2011\/07\/18\/127038609\/the-life-and-music-of-robert-schumann\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Robert Schumann<\/a> early on in 1830, and the two later married in 1840.\u00a0It was after she was married that Schumann began to work on her own compositions. She also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/biography\/Clara-Schumann\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">became a teacher<\/a> at Leipzig Conservatory and went on concert tours. She did all this while running a household and raising eight children. Schumann proved to have the ability to improvise music and learned the pieces which she performed at her shows by heart. She wrote types of music including chamber, piano solo and that for orchestra. Her most well-known works include Op. 20 \u201cVariations on a Theme of Robert Schumann\u201d and \u201cSix Songs,\u201d Op. 23.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Rebekah Davidson<\/strong><br>Intern<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Florence Price&nbsp; Florence Price was born in Arkansas in 1887.
