While the organization suggests that families make a $15 donation for each night they stay, it states that they are always welcome, even if they cannot donate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&nbsp;The Young Scholars are collecting items that are found on the <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/2Yaqe7A\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Ronald McDonald House\u2019s wishlist<\/a> for its families. While there are a variety of products, they are focusing on small packaged items that people can easily grab and take with them as they walk out the door.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<span class=\"embed-youtube\" style=\"text-align:center; display: block;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"youtube-player\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/mOv2lbtv0EU?version=3&#038;rel=1&#038;showsearch=0&#038;showinfo=1&#038;iv_load_policy=1&#038;fs=1&#038;hl=en-US&#038;autohide=2&#038;wmode=transparent\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" style=\"border:0;\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts allow-same-origin allow-popups allow-presentation allow-popups-to-escape-sandbox\"><\/iframe><\/span>\n<\/div><figcaption>(Source: Ronald McDonald House\/YouTube)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe put down things like granola bars, because those are things that they can grab and go,\u201d said Young Scholars Coordinator, Diana Peterson. \u201cIf everybody could focus on the microwave popcorn, packs of hot chocolate, just things that are individual that they can grab\u2026that [would be] really helpful. We really want to focus on getting them a nice quantity of these items to help out.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Young Scholars program is under Sinclair\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sinclair.edu\/about\/offices\/sep\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Student Enrichment Programs<\/a>. It is open to students in ninth-12th grades that live in Montgomery County. They are required to be first-generation college students and have at least a 2.5 cumulative GPA. The students earn points for their volunteer acts. Once they graduate from the Young Scholars program, they are eligible for the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sinclair.edu\/academics\/taylor-scholars\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Taylor Scholarship<\/a> through Sinclair.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The program has what they call the \u201c5 C\u2019s of college readiness\u201d that helps them earn their points. These include:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>College Preparation&nbsp;<\/li><li>Career Exploration,<\/li><li>Cultural Enrichment,&nbsp;<\/li><li>Character\/Leadership Development&nbsp;<\/li><li>Community Involvement<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&nbsp;The Ronald McDonald House effort will earn them Community Involvement points. It will be part of what they call their \u201cDay of Discovery.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cEach year we have a program called \u2018A Day of Discovery,\u2019 where students get the chance to volunteer at different organizations throughout the community,\u201d said Peterson. \u201cThey can\u2026make sure that they\u2019re involved with what\u2019s going on in our community and making a difference.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Young Scholars typically work with the Ronald McDonald House twice a year, during their Day of Discovery time and Holiday Time.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe Ronald McDonald House has been the one we\u2019ve been doing stuff with all the time,\u201d said the Young Scholars Program Specialist, Melissa Ward. \u201cWe want to keep that connection.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This will be the Young Scholars\u2019 seventh year working with the Ronald McDonald House. They made 3D snowflakes for the families this past year and door decorations the year before. This is the first time they have gathered donations for Ronald McDonald House.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe\u2019re definitely always going to do something for the Ronald McDonald House,\u201d said Peterson. \u201cIt\u2019s very important work that they\u2019re doing there. Since we are not able to go there this year, we want to help to provide donations that the families need while they\u2019re\u2026staying long-term.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Those interested can drop off donations anytime until March 19<sup> <\/sup>from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. No appointment or call ahead is required. People can easily pull up to the front of the building and drop their donations off. The donation box is located in the lobby of Building 19 and can be seen through the window.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If needed, Sinclair employees can donate outside of the normal hours. They can call the Sinclair Police so that they can be let in to drop off their donations.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Building 19 is located separately on Wilkinson Street near Sinclair\u2019s police academy. They will be given a poster and a Young Scholars sticker so that they can create a sign that lets people know who performed the work. They will also take before and after pictures.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Over the years, the Young Scholars have worked with various organizations, including <a href=\"https:\/\/ursdayton.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">United Rehabilitation Services<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/4pawsforability.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">4 Paws for Ability<\/a>. They helped to clean up <a href=\"https:\/\/woodlandcemetery.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Woodland\u2019s Cemetery<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.daytonhistory.org\/visit\/dayton-history-sites\/carillon-historical-park\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Carillon Park<\/a>. They sorted through donated clothes for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hannahstreasure.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Hannah\u2019s Treasure Chest<\/a> and gave care to dogs through the <a href=\"https:\/\/hsdayton.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Humane Society<\/a>. The Young Scholars also helped the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.daytonmetrolibrary.org\/news\/3635-new-trotwood-branch-library-grand-opening-celebration\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Trotwood Library<\/a> with packing up books when it changed locations. They assisted the elderly by going to a nursing home and serving dinners. Those part of the Young Scholars will also perform random acts of kindness, which they can log in with the program.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Young Scholars also made bracelets to send into <a href=\"https:\/\/www.operationgratitude.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Operation Gratitude<\/a>, a military organization, so that they could be given to members of the military.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cEven though the students earn\u2026community involvement points, that\u2019s really not what encourages them to participate,\u201d said Peterson. \u201cI believe that they really are good-hearted young people and it really is a pleasure to work with them and to see how caring they are. We\u2019re just really trying to expose them to this lifestyle and most of them love it and they have a good time when they\u2019re serving.
