{"id":30453,"date":"2020-11-03T10:40:14","date_gmt":"2020-11-03T15:40:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.sinclairclarion.com\/home\/?p=30453"},"modified":"2020-11-03T10:40:14","modified_gmt":"2020-11-03T15:40:14","slug":"who-is-desiree-tims-10th-congressional-senate-candidate-plans-reforms-to-help-college-students","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.sinclairclarion.com\/home\/politics\/2020\/11\/03\/who-is-desiree-tims-10th-congressional-senate-candidate-plans-reforms-to-help-college-students\/","title":{"rendered":"Who is Desiree Tims? 10th Congressional Senate Candidate Plans Reforms to Help College Students"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"has-drop-cap\">For Desiree Tims, one of the key issues for her is access to quality education throughout all of the 10th district\u2019s communities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In a 2019 campaign ad, she mused that one of her best memories was graduating from Dunbar High School and one of her worst memories was learning that the same textbooks she was reading in 10th grade were the same textbooks a 5th grader had in private school.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI remember feeling like I was cheated, like the system was designed to make working-class families like mine fail,\u201d said Tims.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One of the key issues for most candidates and young, college-age voters, is access to a good education, including post-high school education, so that they can move onto fulfilling careers and be a contributing part of their communities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOne of the things we want to do is make community college tuition-free so that everybody can have that access and have that opportunity to earn a good education and get a good job,\u201d said Tims.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Tims commented that her father was a southern sharecropper who came to southwest Ohio to work in the factories and steel mills that once populated the former Steel Belt city of Dayton. She also said that her father would not have the opportunity to find a job with decent pay today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWorking-class earners aren\u2019t getting paid the way they were more than a decade ago,\u201d said Tims. \u201cI believe Ohio was left out of the Great Recovery and it\u2019s time for the federal government and the private sector to invest back into Ohio.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-youtube wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<span class=\"embed-youtube\" style=\"text-align:center; display: block;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"youtube-player\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/1U7-sRvshvI?version=3&#038;rel=1&#038;showsearch=0&#038;showinfo=1&#038;iv_load_policy=1&#038;fs=1&#038;hl=en-US&#038;autohide=2&#038;wmode=transparent\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" style=\"border:0;\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts allow-same-origin allow-popups allow-presentation allow-popups-to-escape-sandbox\"><\/iframe><\/span>\n<\/div><figcaption>(Source: YouTube\/Angela Rye)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Tims is the Democratic challenger to incumbent 10th District Senator Mike Turner, and she spoke with us before the election to give potential voters who are residents of the 10th District here at Sinclair a better idea of who she is and what she stands for.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Tims grew up in Dayton, attending Paul Laurence Dunbar High School in Dayton and later earning her B.A. in communications from Xavier University and a J.D. from Georgetown Law.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She would later attend the Women\u2019s Campaign School at Yale University and worked as an aide to Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand and Sen.
