The House of the Devil<\/strong><br><strong>Streaming Service(s):<\/strong> Amazon Prime<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you love independent low-brow slashers and cult-panic films from the late \u201970s and early \u201880s, you\u2019ll very much enjoy indie horror director Ti West\u2019s \u201cThe House of the Devil,\u201d which takes all of the camp from those movies and applies to it the kind of tension found in some of the period\u2019s greatest films.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It also features academy award-nominated director Greta Gerwig in one of her earliest roles as an actress, as well as Dee Wallace and the infinitely great Tom Noonan, whose name may not be recognizable to some, but who is arguably one of the best character actors of the past four decades, having roles in \u201cManhunter,\u201d \u201cMonster Squad,\u201d \u201cSynecdoche, New York,\u201d \u201cLast Action Hero,\u201d \u201cRoboCop 2,\u201d and \u201c12 Monkeys,\u201d among others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-youtube wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<span class=\"embed-youtube\" style=\"text-align:center; display: block;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"youtube-player\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/z9vJF61_NLU?version=3&#038;rel=1&#038;showsearch=0&#038;showinfo=1&#038;iv_load_policy=1&#038;fs=1&#038;hl=en-US&#038;autohide=2&#038;wmode=transparent\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" style=\"border:0;\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts allow-same-origin allow-popups allow-presentation allow-popups-to-escape-sandbox\"><\/iframe><\/span>\n<\/div><figcaption>(Source: Magnolia Pictures and Magnet Releasing\/YouTube)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>25. Behind the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon<\/strong><br><strong>Streaming Service(s):<\/strong> Amazon Prime<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Horror lovers will delight at this mockumentary about what it\u2019s like to be the killer in a slasher movie. Complete with cameos by some of the genre\u2019s biggest icons including Robert England.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lesser movies would settle with simple jokes about the amount of cardio it takes to walk after running teens and still keep up, which \u201cBehind the Mask\u201d does, but the movie is filled with likable characters and an entertaining lead performance by the titular character.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-youtube wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<span class=\"embed-youtube\" style=\"text-align:center; display: block;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"youtube-player\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/7RiJDEZywlw?version=3&#038;rel=1&#038;showsearch=0&#038;showinfo=1&#038;iv_load_policy=1&#038;fs=1&#038;hl=en-US&#038;autohide=2&#038;wmode=transparent\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" style=\"border:0;\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts allow-same-origin allow-popups allow-presentation allow-popups-to-escape-sandbox\"><\/iframe><\/span>\n<\/div><figcaption>(ScreamFactoryTV\/YouTube)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>27. Gremlins 2<\/strong><br><strong>Streaming Service(s):<\/strong> HBO Max<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There is so much to say about this movie, from the absurd, Chuck Jones-esque insanity of it, to the Donald Trump parody decades before he became frightening, to the&#8230;umm, Hulk Hogan cameo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A lot of people don\u2019t like this movie as it veers far away from the original\u2019s more straightforward approach to horror with a sprinkling of comedy. House (1977)<\/strong><br><strong>Streaming Service(s)<\/strong>: HBO Max<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">How do I even go about explaining the fever dream that is \u201cHouse?\u201d Imagine if Scooby-Doo were made into a live-action film it was made by people on mind-altering substances. Oh, and it\u2019s set in Japan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The filmmaker, Nobuhiko Obayashi, one said that in the making of the film his intent was to purposely break all the rooms of filmmaking he could think of. So, yeah. I guess you should just watch the trailer, but seriously, watch it with a friend, laugh, get creeped out, and find yourself falling in love with this enigmatic film. Famed \u201cbad movie director\u201d Ed Wood\u2019s magnum opus of weird, \u201cPlan 9 From Outer Space\u201d is thoroughly entertaining both in its early Hollywood horror aesthetic and it\u2019s wildly badly made hilarity. Think \u201cThe Room\u201d but with grave robbing Bela Lugosi.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Oh, yeah, THE Bela Lugosi of \u201cDracula\u201d fame is in this movie. Admittedly it\u2019s better in black and white, but only the in-color version is on streaming right now, unfortunately.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">P.S. Thus, throughout the movie, Goodman must speak with people who have had actual paranormal experiences, thus placing us the audience in his shoes, listening as an unreliable narrator tells us a ghost story.
