{"id":30098,"date":"2020-09-30T18:17:32","date_gmt":"2020-09-30T23:17:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.sinclairclarion.com\/home\/?p=30098"},"modified":"2020-09-30T18:21:19","modified_gmt":"2020-09-30T23:21:19","slug":"what-effect-will-trumps-patriotic-education-have-on-education","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.sinclairclarion.com\/home\/government\/2020\/09\/30\/what-effect-will-trumps-patriotic-education-have-on-education\/","title":{"rendered":"What Effect Will Trump\u2019s \u2018Patriotic Education\u2019 Have On Education?"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"has-drop-cap\">In a speech delivered at the \u201cWhite House Conference on American History\u201d on Sep. 17., President Trump proposed to create a commission in order to promote \u201cpatriotic education.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Trump later announced a commission that would be in charge of leading this push, dubbed the \u201c1776 Commission,\u201d saying that teachers should focus more on the \u201clegacy of 1776,\u201d the year in which the Declaration of Independence was issued and adopted by the Continental Congress, effectively severing the colonies ties from Great Britain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Many have pointed out that this is in direct opposition to the \u201c1619 Project,\u201d an ongoing series by The New York Times Magazine, which aims to chart the history of America\u2019s trajectory at the beginning of when African slaves were brought to America.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-youtube wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<span class=\"embed-youtube\" style=\"text-align:center; display: block;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"youtube-player\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Q14BTdS6BRc?version=3&#038;rel=1&#038;showsearch=0&#038;showinfo=1&#038;iv_load_policy=1&#038;fs=1&#038;hl=en-US&#038;autohide=2&#038;wmode=transparent\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" style=\"border:0;\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts allow-same-origin allow-popups allow-presentation allow-popups-to-escape-sandbox\"><\/iframe><\/span>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>(The Pulitzer Prize winning project has had many detractors but its impact is undeniable. Source: YouTube\/PBS NewsHour)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe project aims to reframe American history placing the consequences of slavery and black Americans at the very center of the story we tell ourselves about who we are as a country,\u201d said The New York Times, about the project\u2019s original intent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The project\u2019s creator, New York Times reporter Nikole Hannah-Jones was awarded the 2020 Pulitzer Prize for Commentary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Though concrete plans haven\u2019t been laid for exactly what this new brand of education will look like, many have criticized the push for \u201cpatriotic education\u201d as a sort of fudging of the reality of history.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI can\u2019t emphasis how much of a dumb idea that is,\u201d said Jason Apgar, a History and U.S. Government teacher at Anthony Wayne High School, a high school in Northwest Ohio, which he has taught at for twenty years. \u201cUnderstanding what Americans have screwed up on is not hating America. If anything they should respect our country for understanding the dark side of American history. Are we supposed to show pictures of happy Indians or happy black farmers in the 16-1700s and say what a great person Washington was and call it a day? Cause that\u2019s not education. That\u2019s quite honestly what fascist regimes do.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During Trump\u2019s speech he echoed a sentiment, which he touched on in front of Mount <a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/homenews\/administration\/505841-trump-children-are-taught-in-school-to-hate-their-own-country\">Rushmore on July 4th<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Teaching this horrible doctrine to our children is a form of child abuse, the truest sense,&#8221; said Trump. &#8220;For many years now, the radicals have mistaken Americans&#8217; silence for weakness. They&#8217;re wrong. There is no more powerful force than a parent&#8217;s love for their children. And patriotic moms and dads are going to demand that their children are no longer fed hateful lies about this country.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cHe makes it sound like it is some radicalized leftist conspiracy to radicalize into Antifa or something,\u201d said Apgar. \u201cIt\u2019s asinine.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIf there is this grand conspiracy of indoctrination and anti-American \u2018hate speech\u2019 going on in schools, why did Trump win?\u201d added Apgar. \u201cI mean look at the election map, or better yet, the county map of 2016, it\u2019s all red. Source: YouTube\/USA Today)&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The issue became even more divisive on the internet where the terms \u201cHitler Youth\u201d and \u201cTrump Youth\u201d started trending on Twitter. Though arguably, the criticism is warranted, as the debate over monuments has reached a fever pitch in the wake of Black Lives Matter protests across the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Trump himself made a slight at his Democratic competitor, former Vice President Joe Biden, suggesting he would add a statue of Caesar Rodney, a slave owner who signed the Declaration of Independence to the National Garden of American Heroes Park, a move that would be an act of defiance in the face of a Rodney statue was removed from Wilmington, Del.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Though some worry about what an education that ignores America\u2019s lesser moments and what it might do for the youth of America.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe aftermath, in each generation after this will be disastrous,\u201d said Apgar. \u201cI mean, if you look at our standards, we are not required to teach anything about the genocide of Native Americans. I don\u2019t have to teach about the Holocaust at all. Kids can graduate from twelve years of school and never learn anything about the Holocaust. And we\u2019re already seeing the aftermath of that where the percent of people who believe the Holocaust didn\u2019t exist is something like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsweek.com\/one-third-americans-dont-believe-6-million-jews-were-murdered-during-holocaust-883513\">25% now<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Such \u201cpatriotic education\u201d campaigns have existed in various countries, with varying and debatable results.
