(Source: Geography Now\/YouTube)<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-drop-cap wp-block-paragraph\">Okay, so I fully accept that most people aren\u2019t as into geography as I am, but millions of people watch this channel that not only breaks down the geography but also the culture and history of literally every country on the planet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Started a few years ago, each week\u2014or nearly every week\u2014the show has run alphabetically through every country in the world, most recently <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=mFfJ_-XadbQ\" target=\"_blank\">Senegal<\/a>. (Source: Storied\/YouTube)<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Originally started as \u201cMonstrum\u201d, a PBS-funded show about creatures from myth and lore, both ancient and contemporary,&nbsp; \u201cStoried\u201d now encompasses \u201cMonstrum\u201d and \u201cIt\u2019s Lit,\u201d a show about, well, literature, hosted by longtime YouTuber Lindsay Ellis and Princess Weekes. (Source: YouTube\/Entertain the Elk)<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Much in the vein of Nerdwriter1, \u201cEntertain the Elk\u201d breaks down pop culture with periodical video essays that take apart when popular TV shows lost their magic, how certain musicians write their music, the techniques of filmmakers, among a bevy of other topics that any popular culture fan would love to spend their time engaging with.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Also, he does soundtrack supercuts. (Source: YouTube\/SB Nation)<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For those of you who like sports, but can\u2019t really stand the \u201cYell Talk Shows\u201d that most sports shows are and rather prefer the weird nuance and unmanufactured storytelling of sports, SB Nation and especially Jon Bois are your ticket to the best stuff at the heart of sports: the fact that it is absurd and somehow insanely captivating.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jon Bois, who has a YouTube <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/user\/jonbois\" target=\"_blank\">channel of his own<\/a>, breaks down the absurd in sports, and for the nerdier fans like myself, the statistical anomalies in \u201cChart Party.\u201d\u00a0 As for SB Nation, well, they have a shows like \u201cDorktown,\u201d which recently <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=6UEWiYZWLSM&amp;list=PLUXSZMIiUfFSzRfZ0LvcXNd97YGJ3R18B\" target=\"_blank\">broke down the entire history of the Seattle Mariners<\/a>, as well as shows like \u201cRewind,\u201d which explains big moments in sports history and what led up to them and \u201cCollapse,\u201d a show that breaks down the slow decay of one-storied sports franchises and what lead to their demise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Through SB Nation and Jon Bois, we see more of the absurdity and storytelling of sports, rather than the yelling and predictions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><\/strong><strong>Behind the Curtain<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-youtube wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<span class=\"embed-youtube\" style=\"text-align:center; display: block;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"youtube-player\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/2hPn-23N8q4?version=3&#038;rel=1&#038;showsearch=0&#038;showinfo=1&#038;iv_load_policy=1&#038;fs=1&#038;hl=en-US&#038;autohide=2&#038;wmode=transparent\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" style=\"border:0;\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts allow-same-origin allow-popups allow-presentation allow-popups-to-escape-sandbox\"><\/iframe><\/span>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Nic Pizzolato, creator of \u201cTrue Detective\u201d explains how he got into television and the concept behind his mind-bending take on the detective drama. (Source: YouTube\/Behind the Curtain)<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cBehind the Curtain,\u201d a channel that plays audio interviews by filmmakers and actors under clips of the film in question, is both informative and a great YouTube channel to watch when your eyes are occupied.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Most channels on film, including the ones I\u2019ve <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sinclairclarion.com\/home\/entertainment\/2020\/08\/25\/the-youtube-channels-that-have-kept-me-company-during-quarantine-part-1\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">thus far included<\/a>, take what filmmakers have said or what the YouTuber in question\u2019s insights lead them to believe and dissect each piece. Whereas with \u201cBehind the Curtain,\u201d you\u2019re getting the unfettered opinions and insights by the filmmakers themselves, patched together in a way that informs film lovers as to what the filmmakers intended and where their heads were during the creative process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><\/strong><strong>Matt Draper<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-youtube wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<span class=\"embed-youtube\" style=\"text-align:center; display: block;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"youtube-player\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Js9Yn7ShfnE?version=3&#038;rel=1&#038;showsearch=0&#038;showinfo=1&#038;iv_load_policy=1&#038;fs=1&#038;hl=en-US&#038;autohide=2&#038;wmode=transparent\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" style=\"border:0;\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts allow-same-origin allow-popups allow-presentation allow-popups-to-escape-sandbox\"><\/iframe><\/span>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Draper dissects the Mark Waid\/Alex Ross classic in an attempt to find the humanity at the core of these absurd characters. (Source: Matt Draper\/YouTube)<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Matt Draper is suggested for those\u00a0who love comic books or <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=s4X-rtLgYN0&amp;t=586s\" target=\"_blank\">comic book characters and likewise <\/a>for those who just want a really long, breezy breakdown of your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=OzHDjMPFI-g\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">favorite film<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=WPq1MCYzu1o\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">horror movie<\/a>, or whatever <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=BeOrN2LjpaY\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">pop culture pastiche<\/a> you crave as you wash the dishes for the hundredth time or lazily layabout through another Sunday&#8230;or is it Tuesday? It\u2019s hard to say with a quarantine time table hammered into your brain at this point.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Draper\u2019s voice is calming, setting him apart from the large number of YouTube Channels that delve into comics,film or pop culture. He delves into the substance of said subject, rather than just shouting out references or whatever it is they do on those other pop culture shows on YouTube. In fact, I often can\u2019t take most pop culture-related media because it delves for that lowest common denominator pop culture diarrhea, wherein the hosts make bad jokes and dissect trailers to the umpth degree in an attempt to drive up views.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">No. Draper and the vast majority of the channels on here aim to deal not with the digestibility of its content, but rather, dig deep into the substance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>In Praise of the Shadows<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-youtube wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<span class=\"embed-youtube\" style=\"text-align:center; display: block;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"youtube-player\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/HOr5ALigmHA?version=3&#038;rel=1&#038;showsearch=0&#038;showinfo=1&#038;iv_load_policy=1&#038;fs=1&#038;hl=en-US&#038;autohide=2&#038;wmode=transparent\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" style=\"border:0;\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts allow-same-origin allow-popups allow-presentation allow-popups-to-escape-sandbox\"><\/iframe><\/span>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>There was once a time when horror novel covers looked, well, like horror novels. (Source: YouTube\/In Praise of the Shadows)<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Much like Matt Draper, Nerdwriter1 and Entertain The Elk, \u201cIn Praise of the Shadows\u201d is another YouTube Channel that takes apart entities of pop culture like film, TV, books and so on. What sets it apart is some of its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=OSJzyVBNJ2c&amp;list=PL0e9k2Hv8_FuepXo7dgEW5NEeM8Cp4ewR\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">long-form content<\/a>, such as his \u201cAnatomy of the Franchise\u201d series, or his nearly three-hour-long, three-part video about the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=BMbGf1HGaSg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">history of witches<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Beyond that, he makes digestible videos that explore popular horror films and far less popular films, such as the Peter Straub film adaptation of his novel \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=ZDrcfkypjcI\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Ghost Story<\/a>\u201d and South Korean Na Hong-jin film \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=5-P-p-88gkU&amp;t=198s\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The Wailing<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Hopefully, with all of those suggestions, you\u2019ll have plenty to keep you inside and distracted for some time to come. I sincerely hope you\u2019re not losing your quarantined mind.
