 On Wednesday, July 15,  Ombudsman Amy Hartman and Chaplain Larry Lindstrom dispensed inspiring messages in \u201cMoving Toward Hope.\u201d<\/a> The presentation, hosted via Zoom, is the latest edition of \u201cMoving Forward Together,\u201d a series presented by Student and Community Engagement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIf you think about what we have experienced in the last year,\u201d states Lindstrom, alluding to the string of unfortunate events that befell Dayton, such as the Memorial Day tornadoes<\/a>, the Oregon District Shooting<\/a> and the pandemic, \u201cIt is understandable that we might be hesitant to consider the future.\u201d However, in order to adopt a different, perhaps brighter, perspective, one must take those first steps toward hope.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

 Hartman and Lindstrom highlight four key points or steps accordingly:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Attack problems, not people<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Above all, we must, first, discern our circumstance, and thereon, understand that we only hold so much control. We must direct that control towards the problem. \u201cThe dangers [are] we tend to attack the people around us,\u201d said Linstrom. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Be unselfish, patient and forgiving<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is crucial to be unselfish, patient and forgiving. However, like the timeless adage says, \u201ceasier said than done,\u201d right? Most certainly. Amy Hartman agrees, stating, \u201cIt\u2019s very hard during stressful times to demonstrate these attitudes.\u201d Thus raising the question, \u201cHow do we strive to become unselfish, patient and forgiving?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u00a0Foremost, we must respond, rather than react.\u00a0 As Harman encourages, one must \u201ctake a step back\u201d before replying and consider any feasible outcome.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

To emphasize said point, Hartman quotes an illustration she \u201csaw years ago [that] will stick with [her] forever\u201d stating, \u201cJust as toothpaste cannot be placed back into a tube, so words cannot be taken back once they are spoken or written.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Secondly, Hartman expresses that we must ask ourselves, \u201cIf someone were angry with me, how would I want that person to respond to me.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt is always beneficial, as the golden rule says, \u2018Do onto others as we want them to do or say to us,\u2019\u201d said Hartman. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Reconcile<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

If or when we have ever found relationships damaged as the result of being selfish, impatient and unforgiving, \u201cit is important for us to think through, or even better yet, talk through that issue with a trusted friend,\u201d said Hartman.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cBroken relationships cannot be healed overnight,\u201d said Hartman, \u201cAll parties will need to take a step to come back together.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/strong>At last, there came a final and memorable point.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We are better together<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Humans are, undoubtedly, social creatures. We survive and ultimately thrive through connection.  In fact, the Jewish psychologist Abraham Maslow detailed this extensively in his hierarchy of needs.<\/a>  We need to feel acknowledged and accepted, that we belong. Therefore, in the words of Lindstrom, during \u201ctimes like these when it feels like the foundations of everything can be shaken, the truth is, we need each other.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Do not hesitate to reach out for help, Hartman and Lindstrom stress. \u201cWe want you to remember that, here at Sinclair, we do have a counseling services department<\/a>,\u201d said Hartman. \u201cMy department is here to help you, Larry is here to help you, or your students or your colleagues. We want everyone here at Sinclair to know that there are people here to talk through your pain with you.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
