{"id":27522,"date":"2019-12-31T12:03:33","date_gmt":"2019-12-31T17:03:33","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.sinclairclarion.com\/home\/?p=27522"},"modified":"2019-12-31T12:03:43","modified_gmt":"2019-12-31T17:03:43","slug":"hallmark-under-fire-for-lesbian-kiss-ad","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.sinclairclarion.com\/home\/tartan-news\/2019\/12\/31\/hallmark-under-fire-for-lesbian-kiss-ad\/","title":{"rendered":"Hallmark Under Fire For Lesbian Kiss Ad"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"has-drop-cap wp-block-paragraph\">This holiday season, in an attempt to expand the diversity of their viewers, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=-pVnnGK6BP4\">Hallmark Channel aired an ad featuring a kiss between two women for the wedding planning service, Zola.\u00a0<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe are continuing to expand our diversity,\u201d said executive vice president of Crown Media Family Networks, Michelle Vicary in her statement to The Wrap. \u201cWe are looking at pitches for LGBTQ movies \u2026 and we are looking to expand and represent the United States as a whole.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, reactions to Hallmark\u2019s efforts for inclusion were anything but ideal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&nbsp;In response to the ad, several extremists protested such as the anti-gay conservative group One Million Moms. The group of mothers work to fight the \u201csuggestive tactics\u201d employed by entertainment media and started a petition for removal of the ad, which received over 16,000 signatures.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cShame on Hallmark for airing commercials with same-sex couples and even considering movies with LGBT content and lead characters,\u201d the One Million Moms petition stated. \u201cFamily entertainment is not the forum to be politically correct by forcing tolerance and acceptance of homosexuality.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Following suit, the Catholic news organization LifeSite also protested the Zola commercial and gained over 40,000 signatures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThis is a good thing because it preserves children&#8217;s innocence and it allows parents to be the primary educators where sex and sexual morals are concerned,\u201d the LifeSite petition stated. \u201cHallmark would be offending Christian viewers and Christian parents big time by experimenting with homosexual themes, and\/or cooperating with the LGBT indoctrination agenda.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Related Articles:<br><\/strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.sinclairclarion.com\/home\/tartan-news\/2019\/03\/27\/new-lgbtq-support-on-campus\/\">New LGBTQ+ Support on Campus<\/a><br><a href=\"http:\/\/www.sinclairclarion.com\/home\/tartan-news\/2017\/09\/28\/new-outreach-programs-for-lgbtq-youth\/\">New Outreach Programs for LGBTQ Youth<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Hoping to ease tension, Hallmark eventually pulled the ad from their channel.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI think the whole situation is similar to how we are told as children that a bystander is just as bad as a bully,\u201d explains Sinclair student, Nate Smith. \u201cHallmark has given into the bigots and is erasing LGBTQ representation to make some bullies complacent.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Hallmark\u2019s decision to pull the ad from their channel may have pleased their extremist fans, however, it angered the LGBTQ community and diminished their partnership with Zola.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAll kisses, couples and marriages are equal celebrations of love,\u201d said Zola\u2019s chief marketing officer, Mike Chi in his statement to NPR. \u201cAnd we will no longer be advertising on Hallmark.&#8221;After seeing the hurt they caused the LGBTQ community, Hallmark plans on reaching out to Zola to reestablish their partnership and reinstate the ad.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u00a0Additionally, in a further attempt to make things right, Hallmark plans on working with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.glaad.org\/blog\/victory-hallmark-channel-will-reinstate-lgbtq-inclusive-advertisements-after-glaad-and-lgbtq\">GLAAD, the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation<\/a>, for better LGBTQ representation across their portfolio.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cConsidering the kinds of people who watch the Hallmark channel, it probably wasn\u2019t a good idea to run the ad in the first place,\u201d said Sinclair student, Jacob VanTilburg. \u201cBut it\u2019s still a shame that they pulled the ad. I think the whole ordeal just shows that same-sex marriage is still too controversial for the average Hallmark viewer.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A possible motive behind Hallmark\u2019s insistence on reaching out the LGBTQ community may be Netflix moving into their domain.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This season, Netflix aired six original holiday themed movies with one of them, \u201cLet it Snow,\u201d featuring LGBTQ main characters.
