Ohio House Bill 413<\/a>, legislation that would make physicians who end pregnancies guilty of \u201cabortion murder\u201d and introduces the charge of \u201caggravated abortion murder,\u201d which carries a sentence of life in prison or even death, was introduced to the Ohio state legislature on Nov. 14. It has caused controversy over its emphasis on trying to save fetuses in the case of ectopic pregnancies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\tUnder the bill, physicians who perform abortions would face up to 15 years to life in prison, unless the mother\u2019s life is in danger, or if the physician \u201ctakes all possible steps\u201d to save the fetus\u2019 life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\tThis includes ectopic pregnancies<\/a>, a condition that occurs in 2% of pregnancies when a fertilized egg implants somewhere outside the uterus \u2014 usually in the fallopian tube.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If the pregnancy continues to grow and develop, the tube can rupture, and the pregnant person can face hemorrhaging and die. Typically the safest way to treat this is by terminating the pregnancy with medicine or surgery.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
