{"id":2713,"date":"2009-10-05T14:16:23","date_gmt":"2009-10-05T19:16:23","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.sinclairclarion.com\/?p=2713"},"modified":"2017-06-22T09:58:16","modified_gmt":"2017-06-22T14:58:16","slug":"students-bake-cookies-for-soldiers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.sinclairclarion.com\/home\/tartan-news\/2009\/10\/05\/students-bake-cookies-for-soldiers\/","title":{"rendered":"Students bake cookies for soldiers"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Sinclair Community College Culinary Arts students baked more than 140 dozen cookies to send to soldiers in Afghanistan on Sept. 28.\u00a0 Chef Frank Liebold, who oversaw the baking, said it was a chance for students to learn professional production techniques while providing a community service.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGenerally, we just couldn\u2019t produce that; it would be too much waste.\u00a0 But this is perfect because now it all gets packaged and sent to Afghanistan to our troops who are stationed abroad,\u201d Liebold said.\u00a0 \u201cIt helps out the army moms, I\u2019m able now to teach this to the class, so it just piggybacks perfect(ly).\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Liebold was asked about the project by self-proclaimed Army mom Marilyn Ballmann.\u00a0 He used the opportunity to teach his students about a particular machine that bakeries use for large-scale cookie production.\u00a0 Many students had never used the machine before because of the high quantity of cookies required to use it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen it\u2019s going to a worthy cause like this, like the troops stationed abroad, then there\u2019s a reason for them to do it and a reason for me to justify the expense of doing it,\u201d Liebold said.<\/p>\n<p>Ballmann, whose son will return to Iraq in January, said the project was about appreciation and showing the soldiers that people still care about them.\u00a0 Ballmann packed six to eight dozen cookies into each box herself.<\/p>\n<p>Hannah Peterson, a Culinary Arts student, said it was nice to bake the cookies for the soldiers.\u00a0 She admits that she isn\u2019t sure how she feels about the overseas conflict, but she enjoyed baking and learning how to use the cookie machine.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s very self-sacrificing of (the soldiers) to be over there,\u201d Peterson said.<\/p>\n<p>Ballmann is planning on including a typed list of names of the students who helped on Sinclair\u2019s letterhead in each box of cookies.\u00a0 When asked how she felt about the project, she stopped packing and took a deep breath.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWow,\u201d Ballmann said.\u00a0 \u201cI\u2019m blessed.\u00a0 That\u2019s all I can say.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Sinclair Community College Culinary Arts students baked more than 140 dozen cookies to send to soldiers in Afghanistan on Sept. 28.\u00a0 Chef Frank Liebold, who oversaw the baking, said it was a chance for students to learn professional production techniques while providing a community service. \u201cGenerally, we just couldn\u2019t produce that;
