{"id":25498,"date":"2019-07-21T10:00:27","date_gmt":"2019-07-21T15:00:27","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.sinclairclarion.com\/home\/?p=25498"},"modified":"2019-07-20T22:15:14","modified_gmt":"2019-07-21T03:15:14","slug":"claudes-column-painting-of-the-week-4","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.sinclairclarion.com\/home\/tartan-news\/2019\/07\/21\/claudes-column-painting-of-the-week-4\/","title":{"rendered":"Claude&#8217;s Column: Painting of the Week 4"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"has-drop-cap\">This week\u2019s paintings are another case of representational vs abstract. <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Andrew Wyeth\u2019s (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theartstory.org\/artist-wyeth-andrew.htm\" target=\"_blank\">Andrew Wyeth\u2019s<\/a> \u201cThat Gentleman\u201d and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theartstory.org\/artist-lawrence-jacob-artworks.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Jacob Lawrence\u2019s (opens in a new tab)\">Jacob Lawrence\u2019s<\/a> \u201cCabinet Maker\u201d are both respectable pieces of art.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p> Now upon first glance, these two works seem that they have quite a contrast. \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/collections.dma.org\/artwork\/4284538\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"That Gentleman (opens in a new tab)\">That Gentleman<\/a>\u201d is a rather melancholy painting, to say the least. In this piece, we witness a man hard at work building a new cabinet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Related Article:\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Claude\u2019s Column: Painting of the Week 3 (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"http:\/\/www.sinclairclarion.com\/home\/featured\/2019\/07\/14\/claudes-column-painting-of-the-week-3\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Claude\u2019s Column: Painting of the Week 3<\/strong><\/a><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Unlike \u201cThat Gentleman,\u201d which is a representational piece, Lawrence\u2019s work is rather abstract. Yet unlike many abstract paintings, one can more easily decipher what is being displayed. (Karl Steel \/ Flickr)<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Where the first painting invokes a sense of hopelessness and loneliness, \u201cCabinet Maker\u201d shows an optimistic man with a purpose hard at work to perfect his craft.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p> While these two may appear different in almost every way, one common ground they share is the two artist\u2019s chosen painting medium of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.visual-arts-cork.com\/painting\/tempera.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Tempera (opens in a new tab)\">Tempera<\/a>. If anything, these two masterpieces are a testament of how a single medium can be used in such different and thought-provoking ways.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Samuel J.
