A well-liked former vice president from the administration of an even more well-liked president? There should be no bumps in the road, no obstacles to block his likely ascension to the Democratic nomination. Except there are: his past deeds, his current statements and his proposed policies.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Biden\u2019s performance during Night Two of the first Democratic primary debate was surprisingly more dull than I had anticipated it to be. If you don\u2019t, it doesn\u2019t matter because I\u2019ll most likely get the nomination anyway.\u201d<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And a Biden nomination is a very strong possibility that we face in next year\u2019s election. For all of the outcry against the quasi-authoritarian leadership from the current commander-in-chief, the bulk of the American public still appears easily fooled by an expensive suit and a porcelain smile.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Despite all of the \u201c#Resistance\u201d Twitter bios and the strong support for both Sen. (Obama White House, Pete Souza \/ Flickr)<br><br> <\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Fortunately, it appears that he may soon become the architect of his own downfall.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The reports began with a whisper, then grew into megaphone-projected yells: during his tenure as a freshman senator in the 1970s, the former vice president <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/magazine\/story\/2019\/05\/05\/joe-biden-busing-problem-226791\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">voted against school busing<\/a> and had strong ties to several known racist and pro-segregation politicians.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Years ago, it had already been revealed that Biden had a close-knit relationship with notorious segregationist politician Strom Thurmond, so close in fact that when Thurmond passed away in 2003, Biden not only attended the funeral, but also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.buzzfeednews.com\/article\/henrygomez\/joe-biden-strom-thurmond-eulogy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">delivered a eulogy<\/a>.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-youtube aligncenter wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<span class=\"embed-youtube\" style=\"text-align:center; display: block;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"youtube-player\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/NylTKobMUiE?version=3&#038;rel=1&#038;showsearch=0&#038;showinfo=1&#038;iv_load_policy=1&#038;fs=1&#038;hl=en-US&#038;autohide=2&#038;wmode=transparent\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" style=\"border:0;\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts allow-same-origin allow-popups allow-presentation allow-popups-to-escape-sandbox\"><\/iframe><\/span>\n<\/div><figcaption> In 1991, Biden name-dropped Thurmond during his speech in support of the Violent Crime Prevention Act of 1991, the precursor to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/world-us-canada-36020717\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"The Violent Crime Control and Law Enforcement Act of 1994 (opens in a new tab)\">The Violent Crime Control and Law Enforcement Act of 1994<\/a>, which\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.vox.com\/policy-and-politics\/2019\/6\/20\/18677998\/joe-biden-1994-crime-bill-law-mass-incarceration\" target=\"_blank\">Biden helped architect<\/a>. (GOP War Room \/ YouTube)<br><br> <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then, during the beginning of June, it was revealed that Biden had yet another tight bond with other pro-segregation relics from America\u2019s political past in the form of Sens. Though a democrat being a staunch segregationist may sound strange today, many democrats in the South during the 1960\u2019s held racist and pro-segregationist views, earning them the nickname known as \u201c<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.history.com\/news\/how-the-party-of-lincoln-won-over-the-once-democratic-south\" target=\"_blank\">Dixiecrat<\/a>.\u201d (Wikimedia Commons)<br><br> <\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As if his unsettling chumminess with the pair wasn\u2019t enough, Biden\u2019s response to the news getting out simply added fuel to the flames.&nbsp;<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Once the press began inquiring about his shady past, rather than simply apologizing or at least coming up with some sort of bumbling explanation, he took an ironically Trump-like route, which was to double-down, scoff at any questions and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2019\/06\/19\/politics\/joe-biden-segregationists-cory-booker\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">apologize for nothing<\/a>.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">During a speech he gave to a number of donors at a fundraising event, he spoke fondly of Eastland, saying &#8220;I was in a caucus with James O. Eastland. He never called me &#8216;boy,&#8217; he always called me &#8216;son,'&#8221;&nbsp;<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A week before the first Democratic primary debate, he even went so far as to claim that Sen. Corey Booker, one of Biden\u2019s rivals for the Democratic nomination and one of the most vocal critics of Biden\u2019s segregationist ties, should apologize for his criticism, saying &#8220;Apologize for what? Cory should apologize. He knows better. There\u2019s not a racist bone in my body. I\u2019ve been involved in civil rights my whole career. Period.\u201d<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Biden has since then apologized for his comments, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/booker-im-frustrated-biden-apology-on-segregationist-senator-comments-took-so-long\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">much to Booker\u2019s frustration<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Despite his recent \u201capology,\u201d one of Biden\u2019s earlier comments in regards to his dealings with segregationists confirmed for me what many people opposed to Biden were already suspicious of: that a Biden presidency would lead to no actual, legitimate, fundamental change, but a change in the vein of optics and flaccid legislation. A change in the replacement of orange skin and Twitter tantrums for Veneers and an \u201cAw, shucks\u201d superficial charm akin to Bill Clinton.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">An additional comment from the former vice president, though in response to his segregationist ties, is what I assert that a Biden presidency would ultimately entail, with his comment being:<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;The point I&#8217;m making is you don&#8217;t have to agree. You don&#8217;t have to like the people in terms of their views, but you just simply make the case and you beat them. You beat them without changing the system.&#8221;<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Those last four words \u201c&#8230;without changing the system,\u201d is all one needs to assess when pondering about where the former vice president plans on taking the country, which is to say nowhere.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you need <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/opinions\/2019\/06\/19\/bidens-comments-about-segregationists-rich-are-deeply-problematic\/?utm_term=.05ad3d446859\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">more proof<\/a>, just look at a comment Biden made to a group of rich donors at yet another fundraiser he held, in which he made it clear that under his leadership \u201cNo one\u2019s standard of living will change, nothing would fundamentally change,\u201d in regards to taxes or their wealth.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The fact of the matter is that Biden\u2019s support seems to be coming from three sources: wealthy Americans concerned with the negative effect that a Sanders or Warren presidency may have on their pocketbooks, feeble-minded Democratic voters who vote purely based on popularity and other superficial reasons and the \u201cBlue Wave,\u201d \u201c#NotMyPresident\u201d liberal cadre who simply want Trump out of office and have put no actual thought into which candidate would be best to usher in a new, brighter future for American politics.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" data-attachment-id=\"25396\" data-permalink=\"https:\/\/www.sinclairclarion.com\/home\/tartan-news\/2019\/07\/17\/the-ballad-of-joe-biden\/attachment\/joe-biden-4\/\" data-orig-file=\"https:\/\/www.sinclairclarion.com\/home\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/Joe-Biden-4.jpg\" data-orig-size=\"1024,683\" data-comments-opened=\"0\" data-image-meta=\"{&quot;aperture&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;credit&quot;:&quot;The White House&quot;,&quot;camera&quot;:&quot;Canon EOS 5D Mark III&quot;,&quot;caption&quot;:&quot;Vice President Joe Biden listens to President Barack Obama during a meeting in the Situation Room of the White House, Feb. 2, 2015.\\u00ca(Official White House Photo by Pete Souza)  This official White House photograph is being made available only for publication by news organizations and\/or for personal use printing by the subject(s) of the photograph. (Obama White House, Pete Souza \/ Flickr)<br><br> <\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ultimately, I have not put much thought into whether or not Biden is a closet racist, nor do I really care, seeing as how whether or not a politician holds bigoted views <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vox.com\/2016\/7\/25\/12270880\/donald-trump-racist-racism-history\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">seems to not matter at all in American politics<\/a>.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One thing that I do know, however, is that a Biden presidency would equate to a step backward, a stifling of the growing voice among Americans who are sick of tax cuts for the wealthy, Wall Street bailouts, migrant men, women and children being held captive in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thedailybeast.com\/holocaust-survivor-yes-the-border-detention-centers-are-like-concentration-camps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">modern-day concentration camps<\/a>, the <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.huffpost.com\/entry\/white-supremacists-trump-fox-host_n_5c910aa0e4b0d50545007461\" target=\"_blank\">embolding of white supremacists<\/a>, student loan debt and the price of a hospital bill being the only thing standing between life and death.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Racist or not, as far as I can tell, the only color Biden truly cares about is <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/middle-class-joe-cozied-up-to-credit-card-companies-and-made-filing-for-bankruptcy-harder\" target=\"_blank\">green<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Quinton Bradley<\/strong><br>Intern\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<br><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>With a solid lead in the polls and grade-A name recognition, it\u2019s time to assess what Joe Biden truly stands for.
