{"id":24834,"date":"2019-06-27T20:10:59","date_gmt":"2019-06-28T01:10:59","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.sinclairclarion.com\/home\/?p=24834"},"modified":"2019-06-28T20:15:48","modified_gmt":"2019-06-29T01:15:48","slug":"the-first-democratic-primary-debate-night-one","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.sinclairclarion.com\/home\/tartan-news\/2019\/06\/27\/the-first-democratic-primary-debate-night-one\/","title":{"rendered":"The First Democratic Primary Debate: Night One"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>During the event that much of America had been anticipating, we saw Elizabeth Warren shine, Bill de Blasio surprise and Beto O\u2019Rourke stumble.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-drop-cap\">The first night of this week\u2019s Democratic primary debate premiered last Wednesday, broadcasting on the televisions, computers and phones of millions of Americans all across the nation as one half of the debate\u2019s 20 candidates each vied for the spotlight.&nbsp;<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At 9:00 p.m. sharp, NBC News\u2019 Lester Holt and Savannah Guthrie appeared onscreen live from Miami, Florida to usher in Night One of the 2020 presidential election\u2019s first Democratic primary debate. (NBC New York \/ YouTube) <\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>As the first three moderators made their way to the desk, we were given a brief view of each of the 10 candidates onstage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With sparkling eyes and friendly grins on their faces, the candidates exchanged greetings and handshakes as they made their way to the podiums.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The camera swung around for a wide shot of the crowd and the moderators, who could be seen seated at their desk and shuffling papers.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After some brief applause and cheers from the audience as the event officially began, we were treated to another view of the stage while Holt made the opening remarks and went over the rules and format for the night\u2019s debate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The quintet of Sen. Elizabeth Warren, Sen. Corey Booker, Rep. Tulsi Gabbard, Rep. Beto O\u2019Rourke and Sen. Amy Klobuchar\u2014the group\u2019s most notable candidates\u2014were placed dead-center, with former HUD secretary Julian Castro, Gov. Jay Inslee, New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio, former Rep. John Delaney and Rep. Yes, we\u2019re supposed to be for a 70 percent tax rate on the wealthy. Yes we\u2019re supposed to be for free public college for our young people. Yes, we are supposed to break up big corporations when they\u2019re not serving our democracy&#8230;there\u2019s plenty of money in this world, there\u2019s plenty of money in this country\u2014it\u2019s just in the wrong hands and Democrats have to fix that.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The New York Mayor\u2019s line of rhetoric drew some big applause. (NBC News \/ YouTube)<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Despite the near-uniformity in each of the candidates answers, one key takeaway last night was how each of the presidential hopefuls appeared to be pushing further to the left of former vice president and leading candidate Joe Biden, with each of them making it a point to call out corporate greed and the current administration\u2019s failure to help the working class.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Even the more moderate politicians of the bunch had some harsh words for  President Trump, with Gabbard (a military veteran, one who <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"isn't shy about reminding you about it (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2019\/06\/26\/us\/politics\/pete-buttigieg-tulsi-gabbard-military-service.html\" target=\"_blank\">doesn&#8217;t hesitate to remind you about it<\/a>) referring to Trump and his administration as a &#8220;Chickenhawk cabinet&#8221; (The term &#8220;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Chickenhawk (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/rationalwiki.org\/wiki\/Chickenhawk\" target=\"_blank\">Chickenhawk<\/a>&#8221; is used to mock politicians and government officials that strongly support war and foreign intervention yet have never served in the military themselves).   <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-twitter aligncenter wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">This president &amp; his <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/ChickenhawkCabinet?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#ChickenhawkCabinet<\/a> have led us to the brink of war w\/ Iran.
