{"id":23338,"date":"2019-03-21T12:00:28","date_gmt":"2019-03-21T17:00:28","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.sinclairclarion.com\/home\/?p=23338"},"modified":"2019-03-17T11:05:41","modified_gmt":"2019-03-17T16:05:41","slug":"promethea-the-20th-anniversary-edition","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.sinclairclarion.com\/home\/entertainment\/2019\/03\/21\/promethea-the-20th-anniversary-edition\/","title":{"rendered":"Promethea, The 20th Anniversary Edition"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0 \u00a0On March 12, Vertigo Comics (a DC Comics imprint) will be releasing a new 20th anniversary deluxe edition for book one of the reality bending comic book series \u201cPromethea,\u201d authored by legendary writer Alan Moore.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0 \u00a0Moore, known for his deeply imaginative storylines and his self identification as an anarchist and occultist (in 1993, at the age of 40, he declared himself to be a ceremonial magician), is the creative mind behind some of the comic book world\u2019s most infamous stories. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0 \u00a0Of these stories include the critically acclaimed \u201cWatchmen\u201d series, the \u201cSuperman: Whatever Happened to the Man of Tomorrow?\u201d series, the \u201cV for Vendetta\u201d graphic novel (which was later made into a film in 2005), and his 2016 fiction novel \u201cJerusalem\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0 \u00a0His most famous work (which happens to be my favorite comic book story) is his 1988 graphic novel \u201cBatman: The Killing Joke,\u201d which introduced a new Joker origin story that many have taken as the Joker\u2019s \u201ctrue\u201d background prior to becoming The Clown Prince of Crime.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0 \u00a0In 1986, Moore\u2019s \u201cWatchmen\u201d was published by DC Comics, which garnered much praise and positive reviews. The comic was later adapted to the big screen in 2009.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0 \u00a0Promethea, which was published in 1999 by America\u2019s Best Comics, is possibly Moore\u2019s most ambitious project, with the series being an intricate and complex thirty two issue story that spanned over the course of six years, the final issue being printed in April 2005.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0 \u00a0The story involves a college student named Sophie Bangs, living in a futuristic version of New York in 1999.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0 \u00a0For the subject of her term paper, Sophie chooses to write about Promethea, a fictional character that has appeared in numerous poems, newspapers, and comics for several decades.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0 \u00a0While in the process of working on her paper, Sophie attempts to interview a woman named Barbara Shelley, the widow of the last person to ever write a comic about Promethea, but Barbara promptly shuts her down and gives her a cryptic warning about \u201clooking for folklore.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-attachment-id=\"23341\" data-permalink=\"https:\/\/www.sinclairclarion.com\/home\/entertainment\/2019\/03\/21\/promethea-the-20th-anniversary-edition\/attachment\/dcvertigologo\/\" data-orig-file=\"https:\/\/www.sinclairclarion.com\/home\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/DCVertigoLogo.jpg\" data-orig-size=\"700,292\" data-comments-opened=\"0\" data-image-meta=\"{&quot;aperture&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;credit&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;camera&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;caption&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;created_timestamp&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;copyright&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;focal_length&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;iso&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;shutter_speed&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;title&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;orientation&quot;:&quot;0&quot;}\" data-image-title=\"DCVertigoLogo\" data-image-description=\"\" data-image-caption=\"\" data-medium-file=\"https:\/\/www.sinclairclarion.com\/home\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/DCVertigoLogo-300x125.jpg\" data-large-file=\"https:\/\/www.sinclairclarion.com\/home\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/DCVertigoLogo.jpg\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-23341\" src=\"http:\/\/www.sinclairclarion.com\/home\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/DCVertigoLogo-300x125.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"125\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.sinclairclarion.com\/home\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/DCVertigoLogo-300x125.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.sinclairclarion.com\/home\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/DCVertigoLogo.jpg 700w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0 \u00a0Later on as the story progresses, Sophie soon discovers that Promethea is not just a mythological character, but is actually a powerful entity whose aim is to usher in the apocalypse.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0 \u00a0She also learns that the mystical being known as \u201cPromethea\u201d was originally born in the 5th century AD as the daughter of a magician and has existed for over a thousand years. For generations, Promethea has merged herself within the consciousness of others, using their bodies as vessels, with Sophie being next in line.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0 \u00a0Like many of his other stories, Moore\u2019s \u201cPromethea\u201d is littered throughout with references to the occult, Aleister Crowley, \u201cmagick\u201d and if that weren\u2019t enough to make you scratch your head in confusion, each issue that was printed is based on the \u201ctree of life.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0 \u00a0If you look at a diagram of the tree of life, you\u2019ll notice that there are ten nodes along with twenty two lines (known as \u201cpaths\u201d).
