\u201cAnd the Oscar goes to..\u201d The entertainment world is gearing up for yet another Academy Awards ceremony where some of the most critically acclaimed movies of the year receive recognition for their work.<\/p>\n
This year the Academy Awards brings in quite the list for their nominees. This year \u201cLa La Land\u201d tied the record with the most nominations, which is 14, the same number as \u201cTitanic\u201d and \u201cAll About Eve.\u201d Meryl Streep broke her own record for the most Oscar nominations, receiving her twentieth.<\/p>\n
Last year, the Oscars brought in a wave of controversy with #OscarsSoWhite where people criticized the Academy for their lack of diversity in nominations. In order to prevent the controversy from repeating itself, the Academy came up with some new rules on diversity. This includes broadening the number of nominees in some categories, like the Best Picture category.<\/p>\n
As with every nomination announcement, several people pointed out films that they felt were snubbed. Clint Eastwood\u2019s \u201cSully\u201d was skipped over for Best Director. Amy Adams didn\u2019t make the cut for Best Actress in neither \u201cArrivals\u201d or \u201cNocturnal Animals\u201d and Taraji P. Henson didn\u2019t receive a Best Actress nomination for \u201cHidden Figures.\u201d<\/p>\n
As for Best Actor, some noted that Joel Edgerton was passed over for his role in \u201cLoving\u201d while Tom Hanks didn\u2019t receive a nomination for this part in \u201cSully.\u201d<\/p>\n
Jimmy Kimmel will be hosting the Oscars, after they were impressed with his hosting abilities at the Emmys.<\/p>\n
\u201cJimmy has the qualities of all the great hosts,\u201d said Academy president Cheryl Boone Isaacs in a statement. \u201cHe knows who he is, he knows the audience and he knows how to captain a ship with many moving parts. We\u2019re thrilled he has agreed to host our show.\u201d<\/p>\n
Nominees for Best Actor are Casey Affleck in \u201cManchester by the Sea,\u201d Andrew Garfield in \u201cHacksaw Ridge,\u201d Ryan Gosling in \u201cLa La Land,\u201d Viggo Mortensen in \u201cCaptain Fantastic\u201d and Denzel Washington in \u201cFences.\u201d<\/p>\n
Next on the list is the nominees for Supporting Actor. This year the nominees are Mahershala Ali in \u201cMoonlight,\u201d Jeff Bridges in \u201cHell or High Water,\u201d Lucas Hedges in \u201cManchester by the Sea,\u201d Dev Patel in \u201cLion\u201d and Michael Shannon in \u201cNocturnal Animals.\u201d<\/p>\n
In the category for Best Leading Actresses this year we have Isabelle Huppert in \u201cElle,\u201d Ruth Negga in \u201cLoving,\u201d Natalie Portman in \u201cJackie,\u201d Emma Stone in \u201cLa La Land\u201d and Meryl Streep in \u201cFlorence Foster Jenkins.\u201d<\/p>\n
Supporting actresses for the 2017 Academy Awards are Viola Davis in \u201cFences,\u201d Naomie Harris in \u201cMoonlight,\u201d Nicole Kidman in \u201cLion,\u201d Octavia Spencer in \u201cHidden Figures\u201d and Michelle Williams in \u201cManchester by the Sea.\u201d<\/p>\n
Then of course we have one of the biggest categories up for the award, Best Picture. The nominees for this this year are: \u201cArrival,\u201d \u201cFences,\u201d \u201cHacksaw Ridge,\u201d \u201cHell or High Water,\u201d \u201cHidden Figures,\u201d \u201cLa La Land,\u201d \u201cLion,\u201d \u201cManchester by the Sea\u201d and \u201cMoonlight.\u201d<\/p>\n
Amazon\u2019s \u201cManchester by the Sea\u201d made history for becoming the first streaming-video company to earn a nomination for Best Picture.<\/p>\n
There are plenty of other categories that will be given awards during the ceremony. Categories such as Cinematography, where nominee Bradford Young is only the second African American to gain a nod for in that category and Writing (Adapted Screenplay), which hosts the first posthumous African American to be nominated for writing \u201cFences.\u201d<\/p>\n
The Oscars will air on ABC at 7:00 p.m. on February 26.<\/p>\n
