{"id":10461,"date":"2014-10-21T13:14:50","date_gmt":"2014-10-21T18:14:50","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.sinclairclarion.com\/home\/?p=10461"},"modified":"2014-12-02T13:37:51","modified_gmt":"2014-12-02T18:37:51","slug":"students-fundraise-for-guatemala-trip","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.sinclairclarion.com\/home\/tartan-news\/2014\/10\/21\/students-fundraise-for-guatemala-trip\/","title":{"rendered":"Students fundraise for Guatemala trip"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"layoutArea\">\n<div class=\"column\">\n<div class=\"layoutArea\">\n<div class=\"column\">\n<p>For 10 days Sinclair students will be going to Guatemala for a service-learning trip to build clean cookstoves and to supplement their classroom learning.<\/p>\n<p>The students will learn the culture, while helping the communities in which they will be staying.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are partnering with Transformational Journey, which is an organization that does service,\u201d said Heidi McGrew, chair of the communication department.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"column\">\n<p>This year\u2019s trip includes faculty and primarily communication students, who have completed certain requirements.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWere trying to take students who have taken interpersonal communication and intercultural communication,\u201d McGrew said.<\/p>\n<p>She said that the goal is to give students a hands on learning experience that relates to what they are learning in the classroom.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLast year we went with Kathy Rowell, and she was doing a global poverty class. She needed more faculty to support the students&#8230; the idea of getting it to be a yearly thing, kind of happened last year,\u201d McGrew said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"column\">\n<p>She said that students have to pay for the trip to Guatemala.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey do have to pay for the trip and we are trying to do some fundraising to offset that,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>McGrew said that there are many fundraisers happening to help raise\u00a0the necessary funds for students to be able to attend the trip.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are doing another fundraiser at Cold Beer and Cheeseburgers this Sunday. PTK [Phi Theta Kappa] is also doing some things,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>McGrew said that they sell bracelets from Guatemala to help raise funds for the students.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEvery little bit helps,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Casey Sherman, a nursing major who is going on the trip to Guatemala is looking forward to learn something new.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c[I\u2019m] really excited\u2026 We are going to be building fuel efficient stoves,\u201d she said. \u201cIt helps you apply what you are actually learning and apply it to real world experience.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sherman said that many members of the community have issues with their current method of cooking, and it is a hazard to them.<\/p>\n<p>There is a GoFundme page set up by Sherman to try and raise funds for the trip.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAny little bit helps, but its something to go on the trip,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>For 10 days Sinclair students will be going to Guatemala for a service-learning trip to build clean cookstoves and to supplement their classroom learning.
