{"id":10262,"date":"2014-09-09T13:03:37","date_gmt":"2014-09-09T18:03:37","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.sinclairclarion.com\/home\/?p=10262"},"modified":"2014-09-09T13:12:49","modified_gmt":"2014-09-09T18:12:49","slug":"dance-program-ar-sinclair","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.sinclairclarion.com\/home\/tartan-news\/2014\/09\/09\/dance-program-ar-sinclair\/","title":{"rendered":"Dance Program ar Sinclair"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"section\">\n<div class=\"section\">\n<div class=\"layoutArea\">\n<div class=\"column\">\n<p>If you ask Rodney Veal, Sinclair Adjunct Faculty Member, about informing students on the dance department, he would say it\u2019s all about discovering movement.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe strive to provide a<br \/>\nvery professional and safe environment for the exploration of movement at Sinclair.&#8221; Veal said. &#8220;All are welcome.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Veal, graduate of The Ohio State University, choreographs for several dance companies in the Miami Valley. He describes his life as \u201ceclectically rich.\u201d His ultimate goal is to make the dance program \u201cone of the strongest two-year dance programs in the region.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Although, Sinclair has no connection to other companies, Veal believes it\u2019s important to engage with the community.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe always try to help each other out,\u201d Veal said.<\/p>\n<p>Another faculty member, Erin Robbins, agrees with Veal. Her biggest hope is for more students to become informed about the dance classes Sinclair has to offer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUnfortunately, many students don\u2019t know the program exists.<br \/>\nI believe when they announced years ago that Sinclair was no longer offering degrees in dance, people assumed that meant we were no longer offering dance classes either. That\u2019s not at all<br \/>\nthe case. We still have ballet, modern, jazz, Middle Eastern dance and, occasionally, tap. We also offer two general education lecture classes: dance history and dance appreciation,\u201d Robbins said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"layoutArea\">\n<div class=\"column\">\n<p>Veal believes Sinclair is an excellent place for every level. There are no pre-requisites; it\u2019s open enrollment.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you have a desire to move, we have a class for you,\u201d Veal said.<\/p>\n<p>Jenny Hunley, liberal arts major, has been involved with the dance program for two years. She hopes to make a career out of dance.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have been taking ballet classes since I was thirteen. Dance is my passion and I seek to have a career in the future, and when I realized how wonderful the dance faculty is, I couldn\u2019t not be a part of it,\u201d Hunley said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"column\">\n<p>Robbins focuses her classes around educating the next generation in dance. It\u2019s not about perfecting the art; it\u2019s simply about exposing people to the history and movement of dance. She hopes to see the department grow.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI would love to see Sinclair\u2019s program go back to offering certificates, as well as degrees in dance.&#8221; Robbins said. &#8220;We\u2019ve made major progress this past season by holding a dance concert, which hadn\u2019t been done in five plus years.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Cassandra Ortiz, American Sign Language and Deaf studies major, wishes she\u2019d have free time to train.<\/p>\n<div class=\"layoutArea\">\n<div class=\"column\">\n<p>\u201cI wish that Sinclair would allow open studio time for dance students. Practice is important, play is important, and the ability to drill and have a great space to do it in would only help students succeed,\u201d Ortiz said.<\/p>\n<p>The dance department is all about opportunities for students. Veal believes it\u2019s about providing classes on campus for people that don\u2019t normally have access to take classes.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"column\">\n<p>Hunley says the faculty is so welcoming and embrace all students no matter what.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know a lot of people are scared of taking dance because they are either scared of not being good enough, being judged, or because they simply think they\u2019re not a good dancer, but the classes here at Sinclair are truly something special,\u201d Hunley said. \u201cAs long as you want to dance, you are wanted in the dance classes here.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"column\">\n<p>Robbins said there\u2019s something special about teaching dance and talking about the history of something she loves.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI get a particular thrill when someone comes to me after class and says \u2018You know, I didn\u2019t think I even liked ballet at all, but after watching it, I really love it!\u2019,\u201d Robbins said. \u201cI feel like I\u2019m doing my part to educate the next generation of audience members for my art form.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"column\">\n<p>Veal and Robbins have similar views on teaching dance. It\u2019s about the elements of each style. They both want to educate students as much as they can to give back to the community.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"column\">\n<p>\u201cWe believe in teaching the elements of dance from alignment, to<br \/>\nspatial awareness, to musicality.&#8221;\u00a0Veal said. &#8220;And now we can provide opportunities for the students to put into practice what has been learned through concerts and in-studio performances.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"column\">\n<p>Sinclair is about diversity, and the dance classes reflect that. Take this opportunity to explore movement. Veal recommends coming to watch the Theater and Dance Production this season.
