{"id":10242,"date":"2014-09-04T15:09:22","date_gmt":"2014-09-04T20:09:22","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.sinclairclarion.com\/home\/?p=10242"},"modified":"2014-09-04T15:09:22","modified_gmt":"2014-09-04T20:09:22","slug":"sinclair-alumni-makes-a-difference","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.sinclairclarion.com\/home\/tartan-news\/2014\/09\/04\/sinclair-alumni-makes-a-difference\/","title":{"rendered":"Sinclair Alumni makes a difference"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"page\" title=\"Page 3\">\n<div class=\"section\">\n<div class=\"layoutArea\">\n<div class=\"column\">\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12.000000pt; font-family: 'ArnoPro';\">With political views always tying into student affairs, one Sinclair Community College alumni is using her knowledge to help activist groups not only in Dayton, but also throughout Ohio. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12.000000pt; font-family: 'ArnoPro';\">Darsheel Kaur is involved with the local branch of Freedom<br \/>\nSide, a group for young adults that rallies against racial injustice. She also works with the Ohio Student Association, an organization for Ohio students to organize, advocate public policy and developing leadership skills. <\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"column\">\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12.000000pt; font-family: 'ArnoPro';\">\u201cOccupy OSU (Ohio State University) was the first organization I became interested in. I looked up information on the group before becoming involved,\u201d Darsheel said, when asked how she became involved in activist groups. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12.000000pt; font-family: 'ArnoPro';\">While in the group, Kaur discussed an instance where Occupy OSU experienced conflict with members that supported the right to carry concealed weapons, while her group held a peaceful candlelight vigil for slain teenager, Trayvon Martin. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12.000000pt; font-family: 'ArnoPro';\">Kaur believes her upbringing influenced her participation in these organizations. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12.000000pt; font-family: 'ArnoPro';\">\u201cI was raised in Sikhism, which is about equality and standing for truth and justice,\u201d Kaur said. \u201cI feel people should stand side by side with each other, no matter their race, creed or upbringing.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"column\">\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12.000000pt; font-family: 'ArnoPro';\">She is involved with many organizations because it makes her feel connected to something larger than herself. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12.000000pt; font-family: 'ArnoPro';\">\u201cIt\u2019s a place where I can bring all of my opinions.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12.000000pt; font-family: 'ArnoPro';\">Kaur believes joining an activist organization can make you feel like there is a purpose for life. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12.000000pt; font-family: 'ArnoPro';\">\u201cEveryone has something to contribute to what they believe in,\u201d Kaur said. \u201cNever feel like you are not important and don\u2019t be afraid to speak your truth.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>With political views always tying into student affairs, one Sinclair Community College alumni is using her knowledge to help activist groups not only in Dayton, but also throughout Ohio.
