For many years, “finding the need and endeavoring to meet it” has been the motto for Sinclair Community College, a motto that has been adopted by the Theater Department.
During the fall and spring semesters the theater will be putting on a variety of different genres of plays.
The first production to be performed live on stage is a musical called “Be More Chill.” Based on the 2004 book written by Ned Vizzini. The off-Broadway musical has quickly become an underground sensation and is now being brought to Sinclair’s Blair Hall Theater.
The story is based on a nerdy teenager named Jeremy Heere, an ordinary high school nobody. Heere pines after the prettiest girl in school, Christine, but is forced to go through school day by day as the bullied dork.
In an effort to climb the social food chain Heere finds out about a pill called Squip, that should help him to be more… chill.
“Be More Chill” starts Friday Oct. 5 and ends Saturday Oct. 13 in Sinclair’s Blair Hall Theater.
The next show the theater department is putting on is “A Charlie Brown Christmas.” Based on the television special by Bill Melendez and Lee Mendelson, Sinclair is bringing the show to life on the stage directed by Gina Kleesattel.
Back by popular demand, “A Charlie Brown Christmas” has become a sellout tradition for families at Sinclair. The show focuses on the familiar “Peanuts” characters grappling with the true meaning of Christmas and trying to find a way to celebrate the holiday together. The show begins on Thursday Dec. 13 and ends on Sunday Dec. 16.
“Silent Sky” by Lauren Gunderson is the next play to come to the stage at Sinclair. Directed by Kimberly Borst, the show is centered around actual pioneer women of astronomy. These women made amazing scientific breakthroughs in the 1900’s that contributed to our time period’s understanding of the universe.
The true story of 19th-century astronomer Henrietta Leavitt explores a woman’s place in society during a time of immense scientific discoveries. This took place during a time when women weren’t taken seriously in science,and if they made a discovery the men took credit.
Henrietta Leavitt and other women pioneer to make a change while also trying to understand their place both on an earthly scale and the bigger picture of the universe.
Silent Sky is set to begin playing on Friday Feb. 8 and ends Saturday Feb. 16.
“All Childish Things” is a story of a heist gone wrong. Focusing on four Star Wars fans Dave, Carter, Max and Kendra, who get involved in a get rich quick scheme to raid Kenner Toys’ secret warehouse and steal all the collectibles they can. That gets turned on its head and giving new meaning to the words number one fan.
This play was nominated in 2006 for the prestigious American Theater Critics Award for best new play. Directed by Nelson Sheeley, “All Childish Things” can be seen on Sinclair’s Stage starting Friday April 5 and end Saturday April 13 in Sinclair’s Blair Hall Theater.
The final play the Theater Department is showing this year is called “Empowered Moves” directed by Rodney Veal. It plays on Sinclair’s Blair Hall stage Friday May 17 and Saturday May 18 2019.
