If I were king of the world

Relax America – I got this

The world is full of problems that need fixing. World economic markets teeter on the brink of ruin. Wars and rumors of war fill the land, sea and air. Concerns over energy and pollution strike fear into the hearts of man.

I don’t pretend to have the solution for those problems, but if I were in charge of the world, I could fix the small stuff.

My first order of business would be to institute universal naptime. Twenty minutes of sleeping would follow every lunch break. We would all be better rested and productivity would increase.

I would also use facebook and myspace as a news outlet. Each community could create their own page devoted to news from the area. It could feature forums with political candidates and announcements from community leaders. This hyper local coverage would result in a more informed public and may cause people to actually care what happens in their neighborhood.

The rest of my ideas involve fixing entertainment. For example, I would require every movie ends with a blooper reel as the credits roll. Television would no longer run traditional commercials, but incorporate more product placement into the actual shows. Reality shows would be made illegal. Production of such shows would be punishable by death.

All music downloads would be free. Artists could replace their album sales by touring more or selling their music to advertisers.

I would develop more after-school programs. Some could be organized with very little funding. For example, buy a camcorder and movie editing software and teach kids how to make movies. You could also use wood shop classes to build sets. Experts from the community could donate their time to help teach. I would make schools the centers of the community. Adults could take night classes to earn college credit or receive training in technical fields.

Every community would have their own network of farms that provide fresh produce. I would build the economic system by focusing on the local level.

I realize there are bigger problems in the world than what I addressed, but we have to start somewhere. I know holes exist in these concepts and I encourage people to visit sinclairclarion.com and comment on this article with their ideas and criticisms of my ideas.

The world is full of problems and solutions cannot be arrived at until we start the conversation.
