Sinclair family gives back

The fourth annual chili luncheon was held on the fourth floor of Bulidng 13 on Feb. 17.

“It’s a feel good event,” said Dietitics director Nora Schaefer.  “People can enjoy the meal and know that they are supporting a good cause.”

Reservations for lunch were limited to the first 100 takers.

One out of eight families in the Dayton area deals with food insecurity, according to Schaefer.  More than 90 agencies rely on the Foodbank Inc. for food.

“The Foodbank Inc. is prepared to help families more than ever,” Schaefer said.

All proceeds from the event were donated to the Foodbank Inc.

“It’s to remind people that there are empty bowls in this world and the Dayton community,” Schaefer said.  The goal is to raise $1,350, according to Schaefer.

In addition to helping those in need, the event serves as a service learing project for Dietetic, Art and Hospitality Management students at Sinclair.

Dietetic students supplied the chili, corn muffins, fresh fruit and water.  Art students donated 85 ceramic bowls that were available for purchase.  Hospitality Management student provided the bread bowls for the event.  A $5 donation bought a bread bowl of chili, while an additional $10 purchased a ceramic bowl, also.

“I think it makes us all appreciate life a little bit more and how lucky and fortunate we are,” Schaefer said.
