Guilty of moral imperfections

It’s easy to forget the realities of the world as we get caught up in numerous tasks throughout the day. Until it’s staring you right in the face. The BP Gas station on the corner of S. Main St. and W. Washington St. never fails to remind me of this. At any given time, on any day, there is likely to be someone asking you for money. I actually try to avoid this place for that exact reason. The guilt is overwhelming, and I honestly don’t usually have that dollar to spare. More than a few people... [Read more...]

While some students are at Sinclair Community College to get the training they need to start a career, an older group of students are using the institution to keep their brains healthy, active and strong. Lifelong learners, mostly from the baby boomers generation, make up almost 30 percent of the college’s 26,000 enrollment, according to Anne Holaday, coordinator of the College for Lifelong Learning. That’s probably why the parking IOU email got under our skin a little bit. It directly had nothing to do with any of us but it just felt like rubbing salt into an open wound. With a little research done though, we understand... [Read more...]

Katherine Rowell, Mohsen Khani and students have seen the lives of illegal immigrants in Mexico as a part of their yearly trip to the country. Rowell, the director of the Center for Teaching and Learning, said that for the recent trip, eight students went with two teachers.  However, because of concerns over violence on the U.S.-Mexico border, the group could not cross into Mexico.  They stayed on the Arizona side of the border. Rowell said it wasn’t the same perspective but it was still interesting. “We... [Read more...]

Questions about parking IOUs answered

The Clarion recently spoke via e-mail with Ty Stone, director of Business Services at Sinclair Community College about the recent mass e-mail that was sent to all students about parking IOUs. Clarion: Why was a mass e-mail sent out to students about parking IOUs? Stone: A mass email was sent out because there are approximately 13,000 outstanding IOUs. It would have been very time consuming to go through the list and match email addresses to those that owe. We were trying to get the message out as... [Read more...]
