The long and winding road

My journey at Sinclair Community College has seen its share of mountains, and because of one enjoyable climb I have become who I am today. With the final edition of the Clarion on stands, my time at Sinclair is nearly finished. After spending the last two years of my life with the Clarion, I can’t help but get a little emotional. I’ve met some unbelievable people, interviewed hundreds related to the college, covered various departments and made friendships along the way. I’ve become more connected... [Read more...]

Remembering the beginning

It’s hard for me to say goodbye.  No matter how many times I have to say it, goodbye never gets easier.  Leaving the Clarion is no different. I remember taking my first journalism class at Sinclair Community College.  Sandy Hilt gently drilled free speech, free press and free democracy into each of her students’ heads class after class.  She spoke quietly but quickly with passion and grace, and I couldn’t help but catch her enthusiasm. Neither could some of my classmates.  I remember one... [Read more...]

The summer of LeBron

The countdown to LeBron James’ impending free agency began the moment the clock hit zero in Game Six of the Eastern Conference Semifinals. After willing the Cleveland Cavaliers to the best regular season record in the NBA, King James and his disciples took a pounding at the hands of the Boston Celtics. Cleveland Cavaliers Until... [Read more...]

With the laws and regulations that have taken effect recently in the United States, it is now harder than ever to obtain citizenship for immigrants, even after living here for 13 years. Sara Hamdi, a 19-year-old Sinclair Community College student, knows this struggle as much as anyone. For three years her family has been fighting for their mother, Fatiha Elgharib, to remain in the United States and receive citizenship. Hamdi’s family moved to the U.S. from Morocco when she was five years old with... [Read more...]

Coming full circle via Sinclair

The cost of education is great, but the rewards are so much greater. Throughout my life, the only person I’ve ever sought approval from has been my mom. The irony of that is my mom is the only person that doesn’t put pressure on me by telling me how I should live my life. All she’s ever wanted from me is an honest day’s work. My mother and her family are immigrants from what used to be Yugoslavia. When my mother was little, she and her family got a sponsor and immigrated to the United States. For... [Read more...]

Embracing a growing passion

I remember the day my dad told me to drop out of college. No, he wasn’t crazy.  He was actually encouraging me to pursue what I loved more than anything else—writing.  He told me I didn’t need to go to school if I wanted to write for a living.  I had to just do it and go.  So, I took his advice. Well, the first half anyway.  I dropped out of Arkansas State University Mountain Home in 2004, right before I got married and moved to Ohio.  I didn’t go to college for four years, but more... [Read more...]
